The Legacy of Jacques van Marken and Agneta Matthes Jacques van Marken was a pioneering industrialist in the late 19th century, known for founding the Dutch Yeast and Spirit Factory in Delft. Together with his wife, Agneta Matthes, he was a visionary in social welfare, creating a model community for their employees. This very building once served as their residence, making it a place of historical significance. In fact, the first telephone line in the Netherlands was installed right here, directly connecting Jacques van Marken to his factory. Their legacy of innovation and social care is deeply embedded in Delft’s history, a heritage carefully preserved in the restoration of the building where our loft apartment is located.
