Enjoy your vacation in an over 130 years old house that has been in our family for 5 generations. Old house walls are made of local mud and stones providing excellent conditions in hot summer days without any air-conditioning. The interior is full of old furniture, accessories and memories. There is an old orchard by the house surrounded by meadows and a stream crossing them. The garden has a beautiful valley view and is ideal for relaxing in a hammock or watching the sunset over an open fire. For socialising over food, there is a special wooden canopy with a fireplace.
Hello! I'm Irena and I am the grand-granddaughter of Jakob, who built this house around 130 years ago. My father fully renovated it some time ago with the help of our family and friends. Now, it's time for this old lady to start sharing her stories and make some new ones. I'm a mom of two, an architect and a designer, a lover of tradition and nature, and glad to help you plan your activities.
Žiri surprises with all its hidden secrets. Marked hiking and bike routs are all over and around the valley. There are plenty of sport facilities: tennis courts, a riding center, a trim trail, a fishing and swimming area on Sora river, a football pitch, a nordic center... The heritage of the Rapallo border that once divided this land has left many military forts from the 2nd world war around the place. A tourist office offers guided visits to different forts and corridors 40 meters below ground. Matjaž’s chambers (8 km) are a former home of a Neanderthal and the oldest archaeological site in the surroundings. There is a museum representing local tradition of shoemaking and bobbin lacemaking. Žiri boasts some culinary offer with local food, great pastry with garden under old chestnuts and a mini zoo and a playground for kids. Make a day trip to Idrija (25km) and visit the second-largest mercury mine in the world, the mysterious lake Divje and a natural swimming area in Idrijska Bela. The ski resort Cerkno with an indoor pool and Škofja Loka are another two nearby (30 minutes) towns worth visiting. And Ljubljana, Bled and the Postojna cave are less than an hour drive away.
