Randy likes to say that at the age of 51 he discovered the career he should have pursued at 23. What started out as a fanciful conversation about opening an inn has turned into a life altering journey within the hospitality industry. Now, almost 15 years removed from that first BnB conversation in Door County, Randy and Sara have opened seven properties across three states and consulted with several dozen BnB’s around the country.
Third Street Lofts is their newest entry into the lodging world and their second vacation rental. But this one is dramatically different than the Owl Ridge Cabin, which was a very contemporary new build located out in the country. This one is a unique blend of historic structure meets downtown loft meets contemporary condo. Besides the architecture, what appealed to Randy and Sara about Third Street Lofts was the downtown location and the opportunity to offer a place for a couple, a family, or a group of friends to spend time together in the privacy of one space with a kitchen and living room. They saw this as something unique to downtown Wausau and very appealing to a segment of the market they weren’t already serving.
About few years ago, we heard someone describe Wausau as “Wausome” and frankly we couldn’t think of a better word to describe this amazing small city in Central Wisconsin.
Wausau is Wausome! It’s an amazing place to live and a fantastic place to visit. It has a vibrant arts and cultural scene (including two renowned museums and a world class theater), great restaurants, one of the nicest downtowns in all of Wisconsin, friendly people, affordable lodging, two gorgeous and well-preserved historic districts, the best ski resort in Wisconsin (and one of the top resorts in the midwest), an Olympic qualifying kayaking and canoeing course, two fantastic micro-breweries (three, if you include the Great Dane which has multiple locations in Wisconsin), a class “B” biking rating, a wonderful distillery and, of course, the natural beauty of northern Wisconsin. It’s the best place Sara and I have ever lived and it’s a place where we consistently hear our guests say “we never knew Wausau was such an amazing place.” Even our young adult children who have lived in Madison and the Twin Cities say they love Wausau.
