There are many opportunities for sailing, boating and fishing, as well as a playground and open-air heated pool. The river is navigable for 56 km by shallow-draught boats Don't forget your binoculars, as the area is renowned for its bird life. Well over 350 different seas, land and river birds can be found here, including rare waders such as the Little Blue Heron, Hudson Ian Godwit, Black Harrier and Lesser Yellowlegs. A bird hide just outside of town is open from 9am daily for sighting of over 200 species like pelicans, flamingos and kingfishers. The west coast of South Africa has long been admired as a tranquil yet welcoming holiday destination, ideal for family getaways or romantic breaks. Situated in Velddrif on the Cape West Coast, just 150km from Cape Town Airport, and minutes from the picturesque fishing village of Laaiplek, the 41 self-catering apartments and chalets at Port Owen are situated on the banks of the marina, offering superb views to enjoy from your private veranda or jetty. The Port Owen Marina was the first deep-sea, residential marina developed in SA, comprising 100 hectares and 3.5 km of waterways. The Marina is named after H. Owen Wiggins Junior, who was responsible for developing the area by dredging approximately 1 million cubic metres of sand and rock and constructing 7 km of embankment as well as many jetties and other infrastructures. He also established the Port Owen Yacht Club, set aside the Marina Centre and established the Langebaan Country Club. The marina is surrounded by the Great Berg River and is 1km from the harbour mouth where the river meets St. Helena Bay, the largest on the West Coast of Africa. St Helena Bay is believed to offer the finest sailing conditions on the SA coastline.

The quiet and unassuming Cape West Coast has relaxation at the centre of its attractions, although there are many interesting activities to enjoy in the surroundings if you choose. All the best-known beaches are within 30km of the marina, namely Titiesbaai, Britannia Bay Beach, Shelley Bay, Stompneusbaai, Paternoster Beach and Blue Water Bay. The West Coast National Park with its spring flowers and scenes of natural wonder begs exploration, while Tali Tali and Elandsfontein Private Game Reserves provide opportunities to stroll or quadbike amongst the wild animals. Cape Columbines’ lighthouse has many an interesting tale to tell, as do the museums at SA Fisheries, Jan Dankaert Museum and the Piketberg Museum. Step back in time at the nearby West Coast Fossil Park, where the remains of over 200 different kinds of animals have been recovered – making this one of the richest archaeological troves in the world. In town, the Harbour Centre has shops, a health spa, a pub, restaurants, a hairdressing salon, café and estate agency, while The Mill Country Fair is a fun day out to sample local wares.
