I enjoyed the experience. The fact that you grind your own coffee and have a wonderful view makes you realise how people were doing it years ago.

Property information

Krisjan se Uitkykwa (Krisjan’s “Lookout” Wagon) and Attiesewa are the two “big greys.” They are large, sturdy transport wagons that’s now comfortably fitted out and has ample space for younger family members’ bedding on the porch or under the wagon. The kitchen on the porch is handcrafted from reclaimed wood, and with the blankets, fold-up table and chairs, it harks back to transport riders who’d set up a fire to cook potjiekos and bake bread in a cast iron pot. A cake tin with cookies and rusks and a small container of milk are provided to enjoy with a cup of boeretroos or tea. Coffee beans need to be freshly ground, and a gas stove is provided for boiling water. A bundle of firewood is supplied for gatherings around the Karoo campfire. This ‘staning’ has recently added a new boma and an interesting braai area with an anthill oven, where guests can enjoy themselves. For entertainment, the young and young at heart can have fun with ketties, or the older folk can teach the art of whip-cracking and jukskei. The bathroom’s mosaic floor depicts the legend of the Gariep River’s water snake, which slithers under the sink, past the toilet, and disappears among the river pebbles in the shower. The diamond on her forehead has been coveted by many brave men, but woe to the one who encounters the water snake... KrisJan se Uitkykwa and Attiesewa share the bathroom. Attie’s Wagon is a large, sturdy transport wagon that used to carry maize across the Highveld. It’s now been comfortably converted, with enough space for the younger family members’ bedding on the porch or under the wagon. The kitchen on the porch is handmade from reclaimed wood, and along with the blanket chest, fold-up table, and rope chairs, it recalls the days when transport riders would stop at a resting place, light a fire, and cook potjiekos.
