Step back in time and reconnect with nature at The Old Dairy Guesthouse, a lovingly restored farmhouse set deep within one of the world’s most threatened habitats – Renosterveld. Once a working milking shed, the building’s original clay and brick walls still stand strong, offering guests a glimpse into the cultural history of this land. This off-the-beaten-path escape is cozy, rustic, and full of charm, ideal for nature lovers, couples, families, and adventurers looking to slow down and breathe. Situated between Bredasdorp and Swellendam, the guesthouse sleeps up to six people with two double bedrooms and one room with two single beds as well as two shared bathrooms, making it perfect for groups or families. Cook up a storm in the fully equipped kitchen, gather around the indoor fireplace on chilly evenings, enjoy a braai under the stars, or set off on one of the many hiking trails to experience the rich birdlife and biodiversity of the largest stretch of Renosterveld left on Earth. Located within easy reach of the renowned De Hoop Nature Reserve, guests can also explore its vast dunes, whale-watching cliffs, and marine-protected coastline, perfect for a day trip filled with coastal wonder. Please note: we are proudly remote and semi off-grid. Access is via gravel roads (no 4x4 needed, but muddy in the rain), it is around a 45-minute drive away from the closest town and there are no nearby shops or restaurants, so come prepared with all you need. Drinking water is advised, as we run mostly on rainwater. Occasional power or water cuts can happen, part of the true unplugged experience. The Overberg Renosterveld Trust is a non-profit organisation working to protect renosterveld, a threatened habitat type that forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Renosterveld has largely been removed over the past decades, making way for agricultural activities. Because only remnants of renosterveld remain, coupled with the large range of endemic and threatened plants and animals inhabiting this bio-hotspot, this unique rhino veld is one of the most threatened habitats on Earth. As such, it's in need of urgent need of conservation attention. The Trust works to ensure that renosterveld landscapes are sustainably managed to integrate biodiversity, ecosystem function and livelihoods.
