A property steeped in history! In about 1836, many of the Boers who had been ousted by the British at the Battle of Congella moved away from Durban and Settled in Pietermaritzburg. One of them, David Benjamin Snyman, was granted land on the far side of the uMngeni River which he named Cypherfontein because of the purity of the water in the springs. He built a small shale house which extended to include a large room with a solder above. As a large number of settlers arrived in the Natal Midlands, many of the original Boer settlers left to go further North. They included Snyman, who after selling his land to reverand James Archbell in 1843, went with them. Archbell built a large house of dressed blue stone very close to the original house for his family. Eventually these two houses were joined to form one big house with pitsawn Yellowood beams, ceilings and doors sourced from the Karkloof. In 1846 Cypherfontein and several adjacent farms were surveyed and Archbell was given the the title deeds. Part of this land was subdivided and formed the small town that is now Howick. After many subdivisions over the years, Stocklands farm now consists of 10 acres in extent.
I have a Master of Science in Dietetics, but my love for food and people lead me into the restaurant industry. I have owned my restaurant (Pepere Cafe) in Hilton for 4 years and I needed a new adventure! My life partner and I fell in love with Stocklands Farm and decided to take the plunge and open a BnB. We have poured all our love and energy into curating beautiful and unique spaces. I am also an artist, and some of my original oils and watercolours have made the perfect addition to our rooms.
Howick is surrounded by lots of things to do and see. The Midlands Meander is on our door step which features lots of eateries, craft shops, galleries and family activities. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site, Howick Falls and Karkloof Canopy tours are all in close proximity to the farm.
