Heidelberg Castle

The stuff of fairy tales, the warm colored walls of this palace’s fine facade cast a watchful eye over the sleepy German town below. Special features include an enchanting great hall, sprawling green gardens and a giant Gothic building that once doubled as a wine cellar, all showing off German Romanticism at its best.

As we approached a fountain, an elderly couple stopped us...

As we approached a fountain, an elderly couple stopped us and asked my son to take their photo. They gently held onto each other and struck a playful pose—balancing on one leg, just like a flamingo. After the photo, the husband asked with a smile, “Did you lift your leg?” The wife replied, “Yes, I did it!” They told us they were visiting from Melbourne. This was their fifth time in Heidelberg—and also their last. Every time they came here, they would take a photo in the same spot, in the same pose. “No matter where we are,” they said, “we always take a happy photo together.” The gentleman said he would turn 79 this October; his wife is 78. I told them they looked great and could surely come back again. But he smiled and said, “No, we can’t. We can’t carry our luggage anymore.” At that moment, as they stood there holding on to each other, smiling through the years they’ve shared, I felt I had witnessed the greatest kind of romance this world can offer. Heidelberg—this city of love—needed no grand gestures to live up to its name. That one moment was enough.

We stayed at the Berggasthof Konigstuhl Hotel, which was situated on the hill overlooking the Castle. The hotel was absolutely stunning and there was a fenicular which took us directly from our hotel to the Castle in just a few minutes.

Worth going inside the inner courtyard to see the historic...

Worth going inside the inner courtyard to see the historic facades and the huge wine barrel- you can walk over it! Sadly the interior of the buildings could not be visited when we were there but they may be open at other times. If you don’t fancy the steep walk up to the castle from the old town, take the funicular- if you intend the go into the inner courtyard ( the outer parts are free) then the cost is the same whether you walk or take the funicular. You can also pay a bit more to go up the Königstuhl on the furnicular- there’s one stop after the castle stop where you change to the older historic funicular - dates back to 1907. On a clear day the views at the very top are amazing.

Historical site, lovely restaurant, walkable to the Neckar River, Hauptstrasse and tram to Heidelberg Castle. The front desk lady was exceptional! Very friendly and helpful to some weary travelers. I can very highly recommend.

Everything about this hotel is perfect. The location with the view of the Heidelberg Castle with the River and Old Town is just amazing. The Staff is excellent. On short notice they were able to make arrangements for 3 rooms (2 connecting) for friends. By far the Best Hotel in Heidelberg.

The apartment is one block from Heidelberg's old town. Its easy to access shopping, the Heidelberg castle, and the riverfront on foot from the apartment. The air conditioning is a great asset!

The hotel is located on the top of the mountain and just a few steps way to take the cable car to Heidelberg Castle and old town with guest discount. We had a breakfast there, which has a lot of choices. Our rooms is very clean and looks luxury. The receptionist is very nice and her suggestions let us finish the touring in the afteroon that we arrived with such a nice autumn weather.

The location is great. Close to the trolley to take you to Heidelberg Castle. You can easily walk to the famous Karl Theodor Bridge, commonly known as the Old Heildelberg Bridge . The center which was right outside the door of the hotel was charming , and had a lot of choices in foods. There were nice shops to get plenty of nice souvenirs. The breakfast had plenty of options. The area that breakfast was served was decorated beautifully. It is what you think of when you think of a small German restaurant.

Very friendly and easy check in. The hotel is an older building and feels like it even with renovations. However, the room was spacious and clean, and the mattress was very soft and comfy. There is free street parking available, but we did have to park down a couple streets to find a spot available. Walkable distance to the Heidelberg Castle, which was nice so we kept our parking spot on the street. It's a good hotel to stay at for the price.

Location is great right in the Heidelberg old town. The rooms' air conditioning worked wonderfully. The hotel provides luggage storage. The breakfast was very good with many good options for meat eaters and vegetarians (cooked peppers and onions, sausage, eggs, etc.). My room was a premium room with a view of Heidelberg Castle.

Beautiful location, hotel was lovely. Breakfast was delicious, many choices over and above the normal breakfast fare. Room and bed were very comfortable. Beautiful view, took the Tram from the hotel to the Heidelberg Castle and then on to Old Town Heidelberg.

Location is perfect for us. Not too crowded, but within walking distance to the central of Old Town and Heidelberg Castle. Tram is only around 300meters. There's Rewe supermarket and a lot of choices for restaurants nearby. We love that the apartment is very spacious, with its own living room, kitchen area, dining area and bedroom. Kitchen is fully-equipped. There's also a washing machine. We really appreciate the early check-in after our very long flight from Jakarta. Dieter is also a very welcoming and helpful host.
