La Giralda and Sevilla Cathedral

Mad ambition. In 1401, church authorities decided to build a cathedral on top of a dilapidated mosque. “Let’s build such a big and beautiful church that people will think we’re mad”, they said. The result is the biggest Gothic cathedral in the world - a zany tableau of spiky spires and flying buttresses. Don’t miss the repurposed minaret, La Giralda. It’s a true city icon.

Don’t forget to cover shoulders/tops of arms as they were very strict about entry if you weren’t appropriately dressed. Buy a combo ticket at Iglesia Salvador which also permits entry to La Giralda and Cathedral and allows you to jump the queue.

    Spectacular!

Spectacular! Preservation of the building, artworks and history is fantastic. The audio guide is a must: well put together with a satisfying mix of history, architecture, artworks, historical figures and facts to enable an own-paced walk through the beautiful old place of worship. The bell tower was particularly interesting - I wish that I could hear when all 24 bells tolls!

This is a stunningly beautiful cathedral in a country that features many gorgeous cathedrals. I would suggest you take a tour of it. Naturanda Tourist Office did our tour of this and the Alcazar, and the guide was wonderful. In the same area is the Museum of Baille Flamenco, and it was a beautiful facility honoring music and dance.

Visited in October which is in high season surprisingly. Temps between 36-41C. Didn’t book tickets, lined up for approx 10 min only, it’s also much cheaper. The Giralda tower is quite a challenge to climb, but worth the effort.

In my opinion the Alcazar Palace should be prioritised over the Cathedral but views from La Giralda are awesome from the top but you’ll have to climb 34 ramps/ story’s. So you need to be reasonable fit to climb it but once at the top you can see the whole city. The tower is very busy and narrow, so earlier times in the day the better to avoid the extreme rush.

The views from the top of Giralda the tower are amazing and a must to visit and the cathedral...is breathless, it takes me with a professional guide by my side 2 hours to visit the place, is the 3rd largest catholic church in the world, just after Saint Peter in Rome and Saint Paul in London, so is a must to visit

Start early for the cathedral, to avoid queues to get in and to avoid crowds in the Giralda bell tower. Walk everywhere, best way to enjoy the city
