    It's known for having the best 20th century collection in France outside Paris. (yes, really) but has also got good collections of earlier works ... and a major Egyptian collection (Champollion was local). And it's now free (except for exhibitions).

    Grenoble is surrounded by beautiful mountains. I really enjoyed the Musée de Grenoble, including the Miró exhibition, and the Musée Dauphinois.
