    This is far more interesting than you might expect,...

    This is far more interesting than you might expect, especially if you come from outside the region. It tells how these troops were formed and how they performed in the 2nd world war (actually gaining ground when Petain declared the armistice with Germany) and since (they are the crack mountain troops, so have been at the forefront in Afghanistan, for instance).
