Durham Cathedral is one of my favourite cathedrals in the world, a magnificent example of Norman (English Romanesque) architecture. I've been several times and never tire of it. One of my favourite cathedrals. If you want a guided tour, which I recommend, try and have Alan as your guide. He is so very knowledgeable and has a wonderful sense of humour. I tried to book a ticket and/or tour of the castle, but it was closed for private functions, like weddings, for both the days I was in Durham. Early booking is obviously the answer! What a building!

The Cathedral was magnificent - please do the tour, it's work every penny. Back to accommodation - we stayed 1x night on a last minute deal so price point was good. The Kingslodge Inn is located in a quiet leafy location with an outdoor area where it is lovely to sit and listen to birdsong whilst enjoying a beverage and meal. It was within easy walking distance to the Durham Cathedral and Castle. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the water was hot. It was a short walk into the city centre, albeit our room was very quiet at night time. We drank at the hotel bar, Josef’s, which was lovely & able to sit outside by the river, or inside as the weather went cooler. After a few busy days of walking we even used the hotel swimming pool, sauna & steam room. Again, everything was brilliant & staff were helpful & attentive throughout.
