    It's a money-grabbing attraction.

It's a money-grabbing attraction. Going up, you can easily go by the stairs and save yourself the 6€ fair. When up, you need to pay another 5€ to go to the view-balcony. Better go to the castle. You see more, pay less and have way-way better views.

The only down-side for Santa Justa Elevator was the 2.5hr wait to go up the steep climb. The ride is a 5-min ride max but we were waiting for more than 15-20 mins between each ride. When we complained about the long wait to the lift attendant, he advised that he was sticking to the time schedule... which was practically ridiculous. So what was he actually doing in-between rides? ...probably sitting in the elevator biding his time! DUH!

For the same view, on the hill with SJE to your left, cross the street and take a regular elevator inside a small shop (selling cork goods and jewelry when I saw it last). At the top of the elevator, you can walk up an incline and then a few steps to the same spot the elevator takes you and it's FREE. Same exact view.

    Something unusual.

Something unusual. The oldest waterdriven elevator in the world. My tip is it gets busy early so get up early and be ready about 15 minutes before it opens at 7am in the morning... Short ride but if an unusual antique elevator ride is of interest to you then well work it..

The elevator is a beautiful sight particularly in the evening with the glow of lights. We preferred to enjoy the view from below of the elevator, but saw many a smile on those that took in the view from the top.

This is literally steps away from the hotel’s entrance.

This is literally steps away from the hotel’s entrance. There are always lines to go up, but the view is worth the wait. No line to go down. Or you can walk across the bridge at the top and explore the wonderful neighborhood above the hotel.
