Empire State Building

Stretching into the sky at 120 storeys high, the Empire State Building was once the tallest building in the entire world. Not for the faint of heart, its observation deck provides a bird’s-eye view of NYC. Dodge the crowds by visiting between 8 and 11AM, and snap photos uninterrupted with the Big Apple as your backdrop.

Expensive but worth it. Staff at the top were helpful and knowledgeable about the skyline. Good exhibition about the history of the building. We went on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in August without booking and there was no queue!

Keep in mind that it gets very busy and it's heated during winter, so it can get very hot and crowded inside. I would recommend layering clothes so you can stay an okay temperature during the whole visit. I wouldn't wait for the elevators as it can get very long, you can always grab the stairs up to the viewing points and it's only 6 flights.

Our stay at this hotel was absolutely perfect. The location is unbeatable, just a 10-minute walk to Madison Square and Penn Station, and about 20 minutes on foot to Times Square. We booked a room with an Empire State Building view, which I highly recommend: the view is phenomenal both in the morning and at sunset. The room itself was spotless and surprisingly spacious. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Very nice hotel; although the rooms are small, they are very smart designed; comfortable bed of a good size, toiletries in the room; nice New York view from the window; the absolute highlight of this hotel is its location in the heart of Manhattan – just a 5-minute walk from Grand Central Terminal and the subway, and within walking distance of attractions like Times Square and Empire State Building; very helpful and friendly reception staff – they helped my partner with shopping for my birthday :); great rooftop as well

This was the perfect base for our trip, location was walkable to the major attractions and the subway right next door for trips further afield. The staff at the hotel are all friendly and helpful. The lady who checked us in checked the rooms for us and got us a room with a view of the Empire State Building which was incredible. The room was spacious for what I had seen of other hotels in the area, although we didn’t use the kitchen facilities it was ideal having a seating area and table so you didn’t have to sit on the bed the whole time.

Staff very friendly, efficient & helpful. Room exactly as described, small but had everything I needed. Great shower & plenty of room in bathroom. Great safe which easily held my camera. Even a view of Empire State Building! I did one free guided walk organised by hotel - really enjoyed it & wish I had time for more. Breakfast offered great coffee & basic selection of pastries, bagels, etc., reasonably priced and convenient. Very handy for subway.

The hotel was in a perfect location for us, being less than 2 blocks from Times Square and only short walks (short for New York at least) to the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre and Penn Station. Despite it being in a busy part of New York, it was such a quiet hotel which I personally liked. Would definitely stay here again if I come back to New York again

If you want to avoid the crowds then I suggest going very early or late. My best suggestion is to do the Empire State Building at night. I went at 11.30 and didn't wait in line at all!! It's also open til 2am.

  • Check if you can book in advance.

Check if you can book in advance. The best thing we found was booking a time slot early in the day (at Rockefella and 9/11 Memorial) and returning later in the day after experiencing places where you didn't have to queue (Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge). This meant we didn't waste half our day queueing for an attraction (queues for Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building were horrendous and did not offer the option to book a time).
