Booking the personal guide who drives your car and has passed an incredibly detailed exam on the battle and the many units of both armies who fought the battle is strongly recommended. The cyclorama giving a 360degree representation of the battle as it unfolded over the three days is incredible. The battlefield is well preserved with many monuments to the military units which fought there but a guide is essential. Recommended for both serious Civil War and military historians as well as tourists.

If they have a chance, visitors to the park would be well advised to read about the three days of the major Civil War battles before they arrive. The park headquarters has many resources to allow people to familiarize themselves with the events that occurred on site, but because there are so many numbered stops along the battlefield trail, it's hard to fully appreciate them if one is trying to learn about each one on the spot. It's better to have a general appreciation of how the battle progressed and the most significant skirmishes, locations, officers and locations before arriving to make the actual battlefield tour more enriching.

The surroundings are so humbling and sacred.

The surroundings are so humbling and sacred. You can feel the spirit of the Hallowed ground with it's monuments', historical sites and Cemeteries. It is set in such grandeur - Lush green valleys all around, surrounded by high hills and plateaus. It is sad, yet awe inspiring and so very beautiful.

There is so much more to see here than I thought. Amazing job of preserving history. They have a very detailed accounting of everything that happened during the battle. Allow more time than you would think. The outdoor sites are more vast than you would think and there are lots of different museums. The downtown area was great, good food and drinks. We spent 3nights and 2 full days visiting but definitely could have used 3-4 days.

Start as early as you can to tour the battlefield. Take at least two days to hit all the significant spots on the battlefield. Spend an entire day walking up and down York Street, the shops and museums (some are free) are all worth checking out.

Took a bus tour and was very impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm of the tour guide and driver. They covered a good portion of the battle in two hours. It was an excellent introduction. If you have more time available visit the museum and learn more.
