The hosts were so kind and the welcome coffee they serve is the best of the region. The house is very clean despite of the 180 years of history. Also, the hosts gave us a half hour explanation to the beautiful house and the surrounding area in details. We felt so heartfelt. Definitely recommend anyone who wish to have a Japanese house for their trip.

I had a great stay at this hotel. I chose it because it was close to the ferry terminal (less than 10 minute walk) to take a ferry to Kumamoto. The room was clean and spacious. The public bath was in another building (very close by), and on the 6th floor with an open-air view of the sea. It was very nice. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the closest train station (Shimabara-Ko). The center of Shimabara is about a 10 minute train ride, or 30-40 minute walk. The breakfast at the hotel was really nice, too, with local food to try.

Perfect balance of efficiency and affordability. The people who designed this place knew what they were doing. The room has everything needed including a large desk. (Rare in my month here) The lighting is just right and the switches are in the right places. The heater is great. There are coat hooks and hangers (yay hooks) and there is a luggage stand. (No drawers for unpacking, though. That space went to the mini refrigerator and I would have made the same choice). There is an onsen downstairs, and the women's side has a door code to keep out unexpected visitors. Hanamizuki is right next to the train station and bus hub, with lots of restaurants. The castle and koi street are easy to walk to.

The staff was really nice and helpful, the location is great to explore the city and surroundings, including namporu onsen and unzen onsen, and it's really close to one of the best street food cart we've tried!

During our 16-day holiday in Japan, my husband & I, together with another couple, stayed in 7 ryokans/hotels & Iseya is the BEST! The hotel is new & clean & the facilities are so good! We opted for dinner & breakfast in the hotel & we were so happy & satisfied with the quality & freshness of the food & service level of the attending staff who went beyond their call of duty to make us comfortable! Special mention goes to a male service staff (I think he is the supervisor; forgot his name but was Mayama or something) who served us dinner on 15 Nov. We wanted to order a bottle of red wine & sake to go with our dinner & asked for his recommendation. The sake he recommended was so good, we decided to buy 2 extra bottles to bring home! When this same male service staff heard from us that we had to rush off to catch the ferry to Kumamoto the next morning & breakfast only starts at 7.30am, he left word for our breakfast to be ready earlier. We were pleasantly surprised & so grateful that a new batch of service staff were waiting for us at the dining room when we went down to checkout at 7.20am on 16 Nov. Really fantastic service! This is an outstanding unique property if you like hot thermal spas. While I am not a fan of public bathing I found some hours when no one was there and I snuck in. What a luxury!!!! For next year I am getting suite with the private hot thermal spa so I don’t have to worry about the privacy. That having been said this place is six stars the service the food the Japanese ambiance and the entire experience is complete. I am an international traveler and I go to high end places only. This place was an amazing surprise in the middle of Unzen. I highly highly recommend it

We had in-room onsen, which was amazing. The public onsen was also good. Dinner in a private room for our party was delicious. The town is very convenient to the mountains and the rest of the Unzen part of the national park.

The location was perfect right next to Unzen Jigoku and waking up to the view outside our hotel room was peaceful and prayerful. The private onsen in the room was heavenly and we took advantage of it sometimes multiple times a day. The meals (breakfast and dinner courses) were delicious and gave us a wide range of Japanese dishes. It was also nice to be able to walk down in our Japanese PJ's to relaxingly eat and gaze out the window on Unzen Jigoku. The service was very attentive. The rooms were very spacious.
