We had a surprise that the funicular shut down the day we arrived. We didn't make it up the mountain for the attractions we planned to see. The Visitors bureau were not that helpful. They were very vague and we felt like we had to figure things out on our own. Kind of strange. We made the most of it and settled in for a couple days, strolling the lake road and stopping at different lakefront restaurants and cafe'sGuest review byJuneUnited States - 8.0

We travelled with 3 different trains from Vienna to Obertraun in order to visit Hallstat. Unfortunately, the transportation wasn't very convenient for us. One of the trains that we had arranged was late and we had to wait two more hours in order to get the last train to Obertraun. We departed from Vienna at 8:00 and we arrived to Obertraun at 15:30! Obertraun was very close to Hallstat. Hallstat is a magical place but next time I would prefer to visit it by car.Guest review bySophia - 10.0

Nice old town that has nice stores and good restaurants to go. I liked the Christmas decoration in the town center. Bad Ischl is a good place to stay and drive around to some other towns like Bad Ischl, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Dachstein and BadauseeGuest review byCICEROUnited States - 10.0

Being surrounded by mountains and walking trails.
Being surrounded by mountains and walking trails. I think Gosau is known for skiing in the winter but we were there in mid September and the weather was perfect for walking along the river and lakes. Cool but sunnyGuest review byTRAVEL DESIGNERMalaysia - 10.0
We went towards end of September which was still quite busy.
We went towards end of September which was still quite busy. I would avoid the peak Summer months if you don’t like crowds. Stunning town very picturesque. We had 2 nights which was just enough time to explore the town on foot as the Cable car and salt mines not operating in September as end of season. Great home cooked meal at good value for money at the Restaurant pictured below. Austrians prefer to be paid in Cash especially the taxi driversGuest review bySusanAustralia - 10.0

Stay in beautiful Obertraun instead of the overpriced and crowded Hallstatt! We stayed 3 nights in a lovely accommodation Haus Edelweiss, and following the recommendations of lovely host Nina, we spent one day walking from Obertruan to Hallstatt. Along the way, we saw this stone path going up the hill and we went up (very do-able hike), and it led to a very beautiful view of Hallstatt! We then went down the other way and continued walking towards Hallstatt, explored the beautiful village and took the ferry (Euro 12/pax) back to Obertruan. Next day, we walked a loop from Obertruan to Koppenwinlsee. The walk was very lovely and we saw tiny red strawberries everywhere! There was a restaurant after Koppenwinslee but I think it was closed on Mon-Wed (please check), and other days open for lunch & dinner, so time yourself to make it in time for lunch/dinner. We were stopping so often to admire the scenery that we missed their lunch time! It is better to visit during non-summer to enjoy Austria.Guest review byRaySingapore - 8.0
Bad Ischl is a nice place with enough activities for a sunny...
Bad Ischl is a nice place with enough activities for a sunny or rainy day. Apart from the local historical places (e.g. Kaiservilla, City Museum), it's an optimal central place for roaming around Salzkammergut - Ebensee, Attersee, Halstadt and Haltstadter See, Wolfgangsee, Dachstein, and anything else you might wish. If you'd like to make a short visit to Salzburg, there's a direct bus about every half an hour. Bad Ischl sports restaurants of any class, try to avoid the "tourist" ones in rush hours or make reservations. But trying the facilities the locals frequent in Bad Ischl or its surroundings is a fantastic experience (and saves you tons of money). Some "tourist" places do offer set lunch menus for about EUR 11 per person (in 2024), some of these menus are even haute cuisine, some local classics, but always an interesting experience. If you plan to travel around by public transport (excellent) think about buying one or the other OBB Vorteils Karte and in any case, get the OBB Tickets app on your mobile (bus, tram and train tickets, connections and timetables), it's going to save you a lot of time and nerve.Guest review byMichalCzech Republic - 8.0

The accommodation had great view and the balcony was so Cousy, I could sit whole evening there to spend some quality time. The location is beautiful and relaxing. My kids enjoyed lot. Special thanks to providing such a variety of toys and activity stuff for kids, they really got occupied with activities while at apartment.Guest review byGoudarGermany - 10.0

Gosau had everything we needed for a wonderful, relaxing holiday - a grocery store, multiple restaurants, beautiful views, friendly people, and many trails for hiking, biking, and walking. Additionally, Gosausee is only a short drive away. We didn't leave Gosau during our entire stay, as there were plenty of things to do, including just relaxing.Guest review byPhilUnited States
