How can one encapsulate the exceptional staff of this Falkensteiner hotel in words? The incredibly friendly receptionist meets guests with an ever-present smile, professionality, sincerity and youthful enthusiasm. She had no problem going the extra mile to ensure guests were satisfied. After our stay at the hotel, we can state the same for all staff members. Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden is a textbook example of top hotel service and a source of inspiration for all hotels developing their luxury offer. The Aquapura SPA Wellness Centre stretches a staggering 3600 square metres and is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious in this part of Europe. A rich offer includes an indoor and outdoor pool, a panoramic sauna in the garden and a relaxation space with water beds and a SPA cinema. Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden is absolutely one of the most prestigious hotels within the Falkensteiner portfolio. Similarly to a world-class athlete, it faces the task of beating its own standards and thus retaining its spot among the best in the hotel industry. When we last evaluated the hotel, the Falkensteiner hotel group had only started managing it. Today, it is in peak performance and is ageing almost as well as the finest Bordeaux wines. The hotel has stood the test of time, considering fifteen years have passed since the last substantial investment. Is the hotel the flagship of tourism in Carinthia? Undeniably. Led with German precision and flaunting Austrian charm, the hotel is superb in every segment.

It offers hot thermal springs, beautiful beaches and extensive cycling paths, all surrounded by picture-perfect alpine scenery. Wörthersee is abundant with culture, nature, history, and charming townships.

The region is a popular tourist destination in the summer, due to the Mediterranean climate and warm waters. We had a great stay at the Boutiquehotel. The apartment looks just like the photos and offers everything we needed. The selling point for us was obviously the terrace and being at the private beach right in front of our apartment, the view of the lake and the surrounding hills. I also enjoyed being able to take their SUP and just go for a paddle around the lake. Overall, an amazing stay, 10/10 would come back, Velden is also quite nicer in person than we initially anticipated.

The hotel is easily accessible, easy to find, with a closed parking lot under the building. The room is spacious and comfortable with a huge terrace, a wonderful view of the lake. In the bathroom there is a built-in TV above the bathtub. The breakfast is plentiful and tasty. The staff is polite and kind. The bed is quite large, the mattress is a harder type (this may be a problem for those who like soft mattresses).

It was all positive, the old buildings, town squares, the old restaurants in the "downtown", the spectacular views and restaurants on the lake, walking around those areas around the lake, the weather and how nice everyone was. We caught the train from Pritswich to Portschach which was a very short journey. Their timetables at the station/collection points are so easy to understand. Portschach is a very picturesque place. The houses looked very clean adorned with flowers, very tidy streets. People are very friendly and the majority spoke English. The food was delicious especially the cakes. There was a park area which took you down to the lake. Also a play area for children. We caught the ferry over to Maria Worth and then later, travelled by ferry to Velden.

It was very nice. We enjoyed it here very much. It’s an old castle with fascinating history. At first it was a bit scary, to sleep in a castle, but after a while we fell in love with it. It has some magic about it. We ate in pörtschach in a hawaian restaurant, tasty vegan food. We didn’t try the breakfast. At first look, I felt like running away. At the last one, I felt like I don’t want to leave. It was a unique experience. I’m happy that I experienced this. For sure, if in one word: Extraordinary!

Velden am Wörthersee is a captivating gem, easily my favorite lake destination in Austria alongside the charming Klopeiner See. Just a three-hour drive from Vienna, its accessibility makes it a perfect escape for a weekend or longer. The region radiates vitality, with its sparkling lake inviting swimming and water activities, framed by a picturesque backdrop that feels both serene and vibrant. The restaurants and bars here are a delight, offering a rich tapestry of flavors and atmospheres, from cozy lakeside eateries to lively spots buzzing with energy. Whether it’s savoring a meal with a view or enjoying the warm, welcoming vibe of the town, Velden delivers an all-around exceptional experience that feels like summer distilled into a single place.

Sadly our hotel could not offer an evening meal as they had a group staying, but there are some excellent restaurants in the town: Pörtschacher Stüble, Sissi’s, Werzers Bootshaus (newly opened in May 2025) and Little Italy were our favourites. The young waitress in Little Italy was a lesson in how to wait at tables-such professionalism and always a big smile! We are in our 70s and less mobile than we once were, but getting around was very easy. The ferry runs all day; we spent many happy hours on it. You can buy a day ticket for about 22 euros and can hop on and off. We bought a weekly ticket for 48 euros and got our money’s worth! We loved it so much that I hesitate to tell people about it! Ryanair flies to Klagenfurt twice a week. From there a 15 minute taxi ride brings you to Pörtschach.

Not being too close to Vienna airport I probably should have planned for a couple of nights stay in Vienna either side of the trip, so that the travel to/from Worthersee was not too much of a headache/rush. The train journey was excellent, except, when our initially cancelled and subsequently delayed flight(s) eventually arrived, we had missed the last train, at 7.30pm, and the taxi fare was massive; so we only got to experience the train on the way back. The connections for the train were really good, and the views were amazing. Would recommend, but plan the stay around the travel.
