We've been to Mons twice and both times it seemed a bit '...
We've been to Mons twice and both times it seemed a bit 'grey'. If you're from the UK, the potholes in the roads will make you feel at home. The best bits are the Lago swimming pool with brilliant slides and a whirlpool which kids absolutely love. Just make sure you're wearing the regulation swimming gear. No baggy shorts allowed. We had to buy new ones last year and used them again on this trip. The most moving aspect which we came to see previously and visited again this time was the site of the first day of WW1 and the memorial to Maurice Dease and Sidney Godley VCs under the Nimy railway bridge. The final resting place of Lt Dease is the St Symphorien Military Cemetery, just outside of Mons. The central square in Mons is the place to go for dining out. Nice small country town with new industrial facilities kept out of town. Nice farming country landscapes. Highways nearby (N7, E429). Multiple great and casual eating facilities and new grocerystore nearby. The animal park is astonishing, the best one I have ever been to, absolutely worth the visit even without kids. Especially in spring when everything is blooming. The fauna goes without saying but also the plants and flowers are wonderful as well as the architecture, taken to the perfection. Lovely hotel, good modern restaurant with very good food, good well kept grounds, plenty carpark spaces with cctv. Excellent service for breakfast & evening meal. It's not a big town, but a lot has happened in Mons over the centuries, especially the last 150 years. We didn't find a lot of well-presented tourist interest but we found it easy to explore on foot. The decoration is outstanding.
The decoration is outstanding. You feel like being on a beautiful yacht or at the sea side. There was a very warm welcome by the host and the breakfast was exceptional. The hotel is 100% clean in each corner. The fridge has lot of beverage that you can take without cost. I have visited the three rooms of the hotel and they are all beautiful. Parking a car is a nightmare.
Parking a car is a nightmare. You can be very easily towed away overnight despite the street signs indicating otherwise. Not tourist friendly. Mons centre is disappointing as the best of shops are now in the Grand Pres on the outskirts of the town which have denuded the centre which remains now a McDonald's and general cafe grand place location offering not much else . Used restaurants on the outskirts. We found Flanders (Ypres and Veurne) very clean and more up-market. Doubt we'll be visiting Mons again. This report is given by someone who was brought up in Mons as a child/teenager back in the 60's with Wallonian grandparents.
