Liege was disappointing. It was untidy with a scruffy feel. Many homeless people and drug taking in plain sight. Charlerois not an obvious tourist destination, as it really is a struggling city. But the upper town with the art deco town hall and the main church on an octagonal square has the feel of slightly surrealist film set. One can have a nice stroll through city, exploring its different layers of time and the life of the inhabitants with their very mixed heritage. A little gem of Ardennes with little streets peppered with fancy bars, restaurants and shops. Good both for a one-day trip and for a longer stay. Nice nature around, and a paradise for kayaking. We've been to Mons twice and both times it seemed a bit 'grey'. If you're from the UK, the potholes in the roads will make you feel at home. The best bits are the Lago swimming pool with brilliant slides and a whirlpool which kids absolutely love. Just make sure you're wearing the regulation swimming gear. No baggy shorts allowed. We had to buy new ones last year and used them again on this trip. The most moving aspect which we came to see previously and visited again this time was the site of the first day of WW1 and the memorial to Maurice Dease and Sidney Godley VCs under the Nimy railway bridge. The final resting place of Lt Dease is the St Symphorien Military Cemetery, just outside of Mons. The central square in Mons is the place to go for dining out.
