This trip was a dream! The weather was perfect, and the pousada was really great! The staff was super friendly, the room was immaculate, and the breakfast spread was incredible. The price was also quite reasonable in comparison with the other pousadas in the same area, none of which looked as nice as this one. The only downside (which wasn't really a problem for us) is that there's a fairly steep half-a-block descent from the pousada to the next street, so if you are quite elderly or have mobility issues, this might not be the best choice for you - but it was for us!

I really enjoyed my stay at Penedo Hotel Girassol! The place has a great cultural vibe and is perfect for tourism. The hotel is super comfortable, the room was big and cozy, the bed was amazing, and the breakfast was delicious. There's a lot of greenery around, which makes the atmosphere even more relaxing. The overall structure of the hotel is excellent. Definitely a great place to stay!

I loved Rio de Janeiro - it was pretty much what l expected except for the weather, which was dreadful for my entire stay. I booked a full days city tour which was very enjoyable (through Booking.com) and also a tour of two Favelas. Apart from that , l wandered around the town, walked the boardwalk and sat on the hotel patio watching the activities on the beach. As a solo female traveller l felt completely safe at all times as there is a high presence of police officers.

The city is not very nice but the beaches, specially the Forno Beach was great (go early due to the sun's movement. It get behind the mountain and at 3h30 PM it will not be on the sand anymore). Atalaia beach was too crowded for my taste.

It is not easy to travel to the Ilha Grande (Abraão) from Rio de Janeiro city. But, by arranging an appropriate transportation (coach/van and ferry/boat), the trip can be very smooth. There are no cars in Ilha Grande, thus people with some disabilities (or any mobility problems) may struggle. From a short (1.5 km), Praia Preta is a nice visit where ocean and a river meet -- very enjoyable for the little ones. Also, a tour around the island, although a bit expensive may be worth.

Charming city, so much to see and do.

Charming city, so much to see and do. I love a bargain and there were bargains everywhere! Lots of great food and entertainment. People were very friendly and helpful. You can Uber for almost nothing here, although don't expect air conditioning in most of the cars. I highly recommend doing one of the boat cruises and anything you want to do you can get a better price online. Ask around before you do things, there are so many hidden treasures and such amazing food!! I love Cabo Frio and will definitely return!

We stayed in Itaipava, which is part of Petropolis and had a great time there. You can hike or go for walks just around our Chalet, or if you prefer, have great culinary experience with lots of options and do some shopping. It was raining for most part but this did not bother us at all since we really loved our Chalet at Vila Calp Itaipava and the entertainment at night in Itaipava. We enjoyed japanese food at Zai Sushi and had some great shopping at Mio, MeToo, and other stores at Parquinho Shopping Itaipava.

    Popular small mountain resort.

Popular small mountain resort. Several small waterfalls in the area and accessible in different ways. Open top jeeps are popular, but it can be done walking as well (10 km round trip). There are plenty restaurants (and shops) in the centre, but it is a little crowded. Penedo is about 30 min drive from Itatiaia national park where there are there more hiking possibilities. Angra is a good place to stay for 1-3 days before going to Ilha Grande. If you stay in an apartment in Piratas Mall, as we did, you are 5 blocks away from the Bus station, where you can take a bus to Paraty. And also 25 minutes away from the Port, Santa Lucia, where you can buy excursions to the islands, which are beautiful. I did not go to the beach in Angra, just took a boat excursion (excellent) and went to Paraty.

I think that Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful...

I think that Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I have visited Rio more than 10 times in my life and I have never had a bad time. I think that my consistent positive experiences have a lot to do with which neighborhoods and beaches I choose to visit, and what kind of activities I partake in that help to keep me safe. I usually stay in Ipanema, and I never stay in Copacabana or visit Copacabana Beach. In addition, I try to be hyper-aware of my surroundings when I am in public, especially at night. I stay away from large crowds, and I never get intoxicated in public. I never wear jewelry or expensive/designer clothes in public, but I do wear simple clothes that don't attract attention. I never put or hold my cell phone anywhere that a thief can easily grab it and run away. And I NEVER put my cell phone in my back pocket... -that rule applies to most major tourist cities in the world (Paris, Madrid, Rome, Rio, etc.) because pick-pockets will try to take it. It's true that Rio can be a dangerous place, but if you follow basic commons sense rules you can significantly lower your risk and have an amazing time. Remember that most thieves/criminals are lazy and are looking for easy targets, -so follow the basic rules and the thieves/criminals are likely to ignore you.
