- From US$144 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,475 reviewsWe decided to stay at Arenal Observatory Lodge by the photos, reviews and mainly by its location away from the roads and closer to the Arenal volcano and, after staying there, we now realized that we’ve made the perfect choice. Once you arrive there, you just notice that you’re surrounded by magnificent gardens and you have at your disposal several trails through those gardens and across the rain forest. The swimming pool and jacuzzi it’s a very pleasant addition to the property. The team was very professional and friendly; the restaurant was really good and the food was nice with plenty of options in the menu; all the space and surroundings is well kept and clean. We’ve made the guided night tour and we loved it. Besides that, we’ve made some of the trails and enjoyed it a lot. Our room was one of those facing the Arenal volcano with a wide window directly to a balcony from where we can enjoy the peaceful forest and the view of the volcano. The room was large and the bathroom had a lot of space. The rooms doesn’t have TV set and no AC is available, but they have a ceiling fan that is more than enough for you to get refreshed by its breeze. It was the perfect room. The breakfast had plenty of buffet options besides the menu choice and everything was really good. A can say, definitely, that, if I’ll travel again to the Arenal region, I’ll stay in the Arenal Observatory Lodge again!Guest review byAlberto MonteiroPortugal
- From US$949.20 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 377 reviewsLoved the room, the bathroom, all the details. The view from the room was great, as well as the springs, both inside the Hotel and at Club Río. Personal was kind and welcoming, an extra star for Jorge and Diego at the restaurants! I would say it was also pretty good in terms of accessibility. I truly recommend the Spa, Gabriela will make sure you to have the best experience. Breakfast was good and varied, they offer GF options including pancakes and toasts. I also liked having lunch at Tres Cascadas.Guest review byLuanaCosta Rica
- From US$270.64 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 374 reviewsI loved the fact that’s it’s a resort but it’s in the nature and not crowded, like a boutique resort. Wonderful room, amazing view, nice environment and atmosphere. Good breakfast with a view. You can hike to waterfalls from the hotel, inside the resort ! And there is a little farm with animals, my child loved it. Not far away from the airport so that’s very convenient when we arrive/depart from San Jose and there are plenty of things to do around, including visiting the volcan Poas.Guest review byCeciliaFrance

The included 30 min spa treatments (one per stay pp) were a nice touch. The activity (one per stay pp) was brilliant. The bird life around the property and the trail walk is beautiful. Lunch was good for veggies and view from the restaurant to the volcano is amazing. Pool bar man is a diamond!Guest review byTamsinUnited Kingdom

We enjoyed the area and while we did a lot including driving to Monteverde for zipline tour, we chose one day of pampering rather than adventure so did not hike around Arenal or paddle board on Arenal. We did white water rafting between Puerto Viejo and Fortuna. We did waterfall repelling near Fortuna (amazing). The people are friendly and the area is lovely. We enjoyed a night time nature tour with our hotel (Noah's Landing) and Nayara Gardens was amazing. We saw plenty of sloths but so much more! We went to the Mistico hanging bridges on a rainy day which worked well-it did not matter. We also visited the Fortuna Waterfall (500 steps down-then 500 steps up but worth it!) If you like adventure- there is plenty. If you want to relax-it is a beautiful place to do so.Guest review byTamiUnited States - 6.0
I was there one night because it was close to the airport.
I was there one night because it was close to the airport. I would not hang out there for a significant length of time. Not a good place to be after dark. Also came across a suitcase on a sidewalk. It had obviously been stolen and rummaged through.Guest review byThomasUnited States - 4.0
Proximity to Airport!
Proximity to Airport! This facility standards were substandard. My wife hurt her foot on a dangerous doorstop, sewer gas was overwhelming, no hot water, air conditioner was not hooked up, pumping hot air back into the room. The stairs right from ground level were dangerous. English was non existent with staff. They were courteous and helpful. There were no privacy coverings on the windows. Open hole in Bathroom ceiling.Guest review byKevinCanada - 8.0
Bijagua is a small Costa Rican town.
Bijagua is a small Costa Rican town. It’s not a tourist town. You are very submerged in the culture. Learn some Spanish. Everyone was kind. We ate at several restaurants. We shopped at the grocery. We seemed to be the only tourists. It seemed very safe. The food was EXCELLENT! We drank the water. Read up on tipping. Stray dogs are everywhere. Do NOT pet them at the restaurants. We did the Sky Bridge Tour in Bijagua (a little hard to find - it’s at a resort) and the Tree Top Chocolate Tour. Both we excellent. We hiked to the Rio Celeste waterfall. That is not an easy hike. It’s through the jungle. Wear boots! Snakes are a VERY REAL. We also did tubing down the river. SO FUN!!!Guest review byJenniferUnited States - 10.0

We stayed at the Altura Hotel. It was amazing beyond words! Can not say enough about this place. We stayed in a 'dome/yurt' and it was beautiful, well appointed and excellent in every sense of the word. Breakfast was included and it was such a treat!Guest review byDonnaUnited States - 10.0
Grecia is a wonderful little town.
Grecia is a wonderful little town. I was here to find a new home so I was looking throughout the area and visited Atenas and Naranjo as well. We decided on a place near Naranjo. In Grecia I ate at several local Sodas which were fantastic and a more upscale restaurant called Bariles which was fantastic. POPs ice cream shop is also highly recommended. In Atenas I ate at a really good Italian restaurant called Firenze. The Pasta Puttanesca was cooked to perfection. When driving watch for motorcycles.Guest review byMoore - 10.0

When making your reservation, ask for the biggest cottage possible. Its all uphill and sometimes rainy and foggy when making your way here, and stay on the road ALL THE WAY UP TO WHERE IT ENDS, at the reception, restaurant lodge. This restaurant was a total surprise. The food and service was exceptional. I vote for Jean Carlo as best hotel/restaurant host in the whole country.Guest review byminorCosta Rica - 6.0

This is a busy typical CR centre with little to offer in the way of browsing or touristy type things. Really good handmade souvenirs in store opposite city park. The museum is open Tues to Sat. We missed it, so I can't comment on that. The weather was cold, foggy and at times windy (this was mid Jan). That's all I can think of!Guest review byAdrian - 10.0

Restaurant in front had great food. Staff was wonderful. And the restaurant was fairly priced as compared to other places in CR. Access to the river at the back of the property was the highlight. We spent a long time playing in the river. And it felt so private. And it was free!Guest review byAmitUnited States - 10.0

This is a great area to experience Costa Rica and the wildlife. We visited Mistico hanging bridges (great with a guide as located creatures we would not have); La Fortuna waterfall (no guide needed); Sky adventures (aerial tram, zip lines & trails); sloth guided tour; Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails (day pass with lunch) - all of which we would recommend!Guest review byAmandaUnited Kingdom
