An abundance of lively cafes and bars There is a stunning Botanical Gardens in Palmengarten - a green oasis in the middle of the city and well worth a visit. It is more touristic than I thought, a bit overcrowded for my taste. One reason to not take the cable car up the mountain. If you like crowds and lots of restaurants you're at the right place. Great location for overnight stay for early flight out of Frankfurt airport. Nice hotel, friendly staff and on site restaurant with good food was a plus. Beds were a bit soft but comfortable. The town is a tourist magnet, but for those who know the Rheingau also a Mecca, neighbouring Gesienheim has the University where many Rheingau wine makers will have studied. The whole Rheingau is within reach, the steep Rüdesheim vineyards above the town are wonderful and peaceful for walking, those with less energy can take the chairlift. We tried the Spanish restaurant near the Bahnhof and Breuer's Schloss restaurant opposite (4 metres away) from the Hotel Lindenwirt where we stayed and also ate and drank. Lovely place, well worth a visit. Traffic regime in town a bit chaotic due to 'green' local policies, but sufficient parking for those who can find it. Mind the traffic calming measures/cycling lanes. Beautiful gothic Church of St. Elisabeth, historic town centre with old university buildings, lovely restaurants and some very nice shops. Gorgeous views from the well-preserved castle but hills quite steep with many steps. Lots of students with active night-life during term time.
