Eisenach, a charming city in Thuringia, Germany, is a gem...
Eisenach, a charming city in Thuringia, Germany, is a gem for history, culture, and nature lovers. Best known as the birthplace of composer Johann Sebastian Bach, the city boasts the Bach House Museum, where visitors can explore his life and music. Eisenach is also famous for Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German—an essential stop for history enthusiasts. The city’s old town is picturesque, with half-timbered houses, cozy cafés, and quaint streets perfect for strolling. Nature lovers will appreciate Eisenach’s location at the edge of the Thuringian Forest, offering scenic hiking and cycling trails, including sections of the Rennsteig, one of Germany’s most famous hiking routes. Eisenach’s rich cultural calendar, from classical concerts to local festivals, adds to its vibrant atmosphere. The city is also compact and walkable, making it easy to explore in a relaxed way. What makes Eisenach special is its unique blend of historical significance, musical heritage, and natural beauty. Whether you’re drawn by Bach’s melodies, Luther’s legacy, or the surrounding green hills, Eisenach offers a rewarding and memorable experience—making it a fantastic destination for travelers seeking both culture and nature.Guest review byDaniUnited States - 10.0
Our daughter lives in Jena with her young family.
Our daughter lives in Jena with her young family. This unit is not as convenient to her as others we have used but was one of the biggest and had a full common kitchen to use. We have not seen too much of Jena except the old city and the Bergau Park Mall. Both are nice and different than in the States. Would like to see the Planetarium or go to the top of the Jen tower. We found the bedroom cold in December when we arrived and the common areas cold all the time. There is a large common-use dining table but it is so cold in the area you wouldn't want to sit out there. Nice quiet area but very limited, unreserved parking. We had to park about 5 blocks away and walk back. There is a very complete grocery store called Netto just across the street that had fresh baked croissants in the morning. That was great!Guest review byRichard - 10.0

I remained in Old Town since I was researching my grandfather's story and needed access to archives, the library, Palace and other historical locations and resources. There is so much rich history here and many of the buildings have plaques on them with historical details about the building. There was a decent variety and number of restaurants to choose from in Old Town, it felt very safe and people were very friendly.Guest review byChristineUnited States - 10.0

If you love winter sports, in particular biathlon then Oberhof is the place for you. Also it's ideal for hiking and cycling especially along the Rennsteig. Ideally is best to have a car. The location of the Obere Schweizerhütte was right next to the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton runs. The cable car to the top was amazing and once at the top you're at the biathlon stadium. You xan also have a shooting experience.Guest review byXimenaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Erfurt has a beautiful and lively city center, with many wonderfully renovated and impressive historical buildings, nice little shops and a huge variety of restaurants and cafes, many of them with outside seating. We definitely want to go back sometime during the summer, hoping for better weather to take full advantage of all the city has to offerGuest review bySusanneGermany - 10.0
Weimar remains in many ways the cultural centre of Germany.
Weimar remains in many ways the cultural centre of Germany. It was the home of the literary giants Goethe and Schiller, and Johann Sebastian Bach and Richard Wagner also based themselves there for a while. The architecture of the old city is delightful but Weimar is also where the modernist Bauhaus movement began in the early 20th Century. The relatively new Bauhaus Museum is a must for anyone interested in the beginnings of modern design and arhitecture. In short, there is something for everyone in Weimar, not least its fine range of shops, boutiques and restaurants. English is widely spoken.Guest review byKeithUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Wartburg Castle is a gem definitely worth a stop for the history and beauty represented there. The steep hike up to the top is through pretty woods with lovely views, and the cafe at the top has a good selection of food, beers and coffee! We took the guided tour which I would recommend.Guest review byLisaUnited States
