I was coming from sea level, so I was limited to less than 4000m for the first couple of days (and some people experience altitude symptoms at less than that). I loved the restaurante in town. EL Mesón del Tren! The owners Lorena & Diego were attentive, friendly, and spent time with us during dinner. Lorena cooked for us a great meal as we requested! It's an old Spanish style restaurante that takes your breath away and the Food is incredible! Alausi can be a bit of a maze to drive around. Come to Riobamba if you want to climb/bike on Mt. Chimborazo and/or visit the markets on Saturday. The downtown is interesting, worth a few hours, but does not cater to tourists. It is a city for Ecuadorians living their lives. The markets on Saturday are amazing. They are some of the most authentic, local markets we've visited. Very little for tourists, just real stuff for real Ecuadorians. If you are interested in climbing the mountain plan on time to get use to the altitude. It's a nice little town with a nice spirit . Hiking is great along the nariz del diablo train route - great views. Here you can also see a lot of indigenous ecuatorian people, especially on sundays at the indigenous market. If you want to sleep make sure you pick the right hotel because dogs and roosters are really loud here late at the night and early in the morning and many hotels have no soundproofing at all.Guest review byArviFinland
