The beast walked with me as I found my wooden hut and left me at the door. It was the most pleasant check-in I've ever had. I spent two nights there, sleeping blissfully during the quiet night and hiking in the mountains during the day. The cabin felt cosy and rustic, while also being clean and well-decorated. I didn't make use of the kitchen facilities, but they looked great; and the bathroom was perfectly up-to-standard. We stayed for 3 nights, sight seeing and visiting family in the area. The town is on bus and train routes from Madrid and to other towns in the area. Honestly I never write bad reviews but as much as this is a pretty location the beds were so uncomfortable my matress was non existent and the pillows were terrible - this is the most important factor for me so unfortunately it tainted everything else - if you charge high rates then the facilities need to match. La Granja de San Ildefonso is a little and a lovely town where the beautiful Royal Palace and Gardens/Fountains are located. The palace and its gardens bring to mind Versailles in France but a small version of it. It is a walkable town. The waterfall walk is well worth the effort, take your swimming costume and swim at Las Precillias, where you can buy food and drinks too at the cafe. Very good public transport to Madrid. Rascafaria is a beautiful town that is well looked after. The is a nice public swimming pool in summer too. Cute town in the "foothills" of the Guadarramas. We did a nice hike our first day there. The second day we went up to the ski area several miles to the north and did a snowshoe hike. There were plenty of skiers up there as well (it was March).The town had all kinds of nice bodegas and restaurants, no tourist stores since it is kind of off the beaten track. Local swimming pool was great - adults 3 euros and kids 2 euros for all day and you could come and go throughout the day. Cheaper if you just go in the afternoon. DIA - local mini-market, well stocked, offering fresh bread and pastries daily (the nicest and cheapest pastries we found in town). Although we like to support local business the Patiseries weren't great - not as good as DIA for quality. Closed all day Sunday. We ate at Las Forales Hotel a couple of times, the food was lovely and on par locally on price. There is a Pizzaria half way down the High Street on the right whose food was fab and they also offer take-outs. La Vina, just off the High Street was another lovely restaurant, more pricy than anywhere else in town, but definitely worth the extra cost. There's not too much to do in San Rafael, we were visiting family who live there, but if you have a car it's definitely worth the drive to Segovia (about 30 mins). Lovely town with an ancient aquaduct and also the building that was the inspiration for the Disney Palace, you'll see why when you get there. You're surrounded by mountains so you can do some lovely walks, not that they are sign posted - you'd need to ask the locals...but go prepared because it's very hot in summer and deeply snow covered in winter!!!Guest review byRachelUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The rooms are very nice and spacious with full bathroom, refrigerator and microwave. There is no restaurant but the owners leave coffee, croissants, melk, etc. for breakfast. There is also the possibility to warm up and eat your own meals downstairs in a large room with tables and plenty of plates, bowls, clutery, etc. Everything is very clean and nicely decorated. The Monastery El Escorial is breathtaking beautiful--worth the visit. Most waiters /restaurants owners in the Old City, do not speak English and the menus are mostly in Spanish. But one Restaurant owner organized for us a translator for the next evening !! verry much appreciated. We tried a traditional Spanish dish --of Tomato meat balls and it was excellent!! Cercedilla is a fantastic place for hiking just an hour from Madrid with a train line from Atocha. It has many well-marked trails with different degrees of difficulty for all kinds of hikers. This was a lovely little village to stay in just outside Madrid. It was perfect to enjoy the snowy day. We walked down to the puente de perdon and the bosque finlandes, which took about half an hour each way. We also walked up to nearby hills, where we got a great view of the town. Head to the end of Calle Jaramilla going south, take a right at the municipal pool, then head along the road through the fields and keep going! I would also recommend Meson Paranche on the main sqaure by the town hall, for food and wine!
