Definitely worth visiting—a genuinely pleasant experience. That said, one can’t help but feel that in Europe’s smallest metropolis, shops exist mostly to enjoy their time off. We spent five days there; for the first three, everything was completely closed—shops and restaurants. And when the shops finally opened, it was almost as if they were doing us a favour—just a few brief hours, then back to their well-earned rest. Understandably, during the peak summer holiday, the locals are fully entitled to enjoy themselves. We enjoyed the nearby Skeppargården museum, it was just lovely and so interesting to learn about the history of the last sailing ships. Beautiful old church, monastery ruins and the church path with lovely sheep you could pet and feed while walking. Many places to watch birds. Lovely island in all: the shop had all you needed, Brudhäll hotel had excellent food and the ferry ride went well. There were people with Carl, bikes and boats. Godby is full of opportunities for everyone, sports, hiking, cycling etc. Beautiful environment. Short distances in all directions to historic sites and impressive nature spots. In the east e.g. the fortress of Bomarsund with an excellent new information centre for visitors and the Kastelholm castle. In the west the legendary Eckero post and customs building. Thera are large apple tree farms close by.
