FAQs about hotels in Alsace

A Mouthful of History, Architecture and Food

One of the most important regions in the European Union because of its number of international organisations, Alsace is also the smallest region in mainland France. Stretched along the upper Rhine, this is an area of tumultuous history, great architecture and distinctive cuisine.

The Alsace capital, Strasbourg, features one of the most beautiful European cathedrals and a very photogenic Old Town with cobbled streets and half-timbered townhouses. You can find picturesque castles, villages and churches all around this petite region.

But Alsace is not just known for its man-made structures. It also boasts the low, densely forested Vosges Mountains with glacial lakes, great hiking trails and charming waterfalls. Not to mention its vineyards and the famous Alsatian Vineyard Route, stretching from Wissembourg to Thann and incorporating 67 towns and villages.

A visit to the region wouldn’t be complete without trying some of the famous Alsatian cuisine. Said to be the birthplace of sauerkraut, this is one of the best places to try tarte flambée, a delicious creation of onion, bacon and crème fraiche.

Whether you opt for one of the hotels de charme in Alsace, a stylish apartment or a friendly B&B, Booking.com has a great range on offer 24/7!

Strasbourg is a fascinating place to visit and very easy to walk around. There are plenty of things to do and great places to eat. The cathedral is simply splendid and just across the square is the Palais Rohan- home to the bishops and kings who visited over a number of centuries- it was very quiet when we visited which made it even more special - with so few people we could actually imagine the history of the place centuries ago. The Batobus is inexpensive and takes you on a wonderful trip along the river past the European Parliament with an English commentary along the way- thoroughly enjoyable and we learned a lot about Strasbourg and its fascinating history!

Colmar is a stunning and vibrant town. Its colourful half-timbered houses, cobbed street and picturesque canals make it a joy to explore. It was very easy to navigate on foot, with so many lovely corners and spot to take a photo. The food is delicious, with some Alsatian restaurant serving regional specialities like tarte flambee' and choucroute. And the wine was also excellent we enjoyed the Rieslings and Gewurztraminers.

A charming city, especially the old town with it's cobble paved streets and character shops and cafés. The museum is a must visit attraction. It a good base to explore the region and discover the charming villages and neighbouring towns. We found the people to be friendly and most helpful especially to non French speaking visitors. Visitors need to familiarise themselves with the general opening and closing times of the shops during the week.

I am French so I was happy to stay in France while visiting Basel. Because of the poor experience we had in the apartment, we moved to another one in Switzerland. We found a very charming village with beautiful architecture and nature around. Switzerland must have been wealthier than this part of France for a long time and it shows.

Beautiful village with half-timbered houses in the heart of the wine-growing region of Alsace. Very touristy during the daytime, but the crowds thin out considerably in the evening, leaving the storks in peace with those discerning enough to have booked somewhere to stay in the village itself. Eating out is expensive and the quality is mediocre. Nobody needs to try hard here, because the location is stunning and people will keep coming back even when service is poor. Some spectacular castle ruins are hiking distance from the village. The picturesque city of Colmar is within easy reach. The historic village of Turckheim is worth visiting when the town watchman does his nightly rounds of the walls, wishing all the sleeping inhabitants a "guati Nacht" in the Alsacien language.

This is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages in the Alsace wine region. It can be busy during the day at peak season as it is on the Wine Route and gets a lot of day visitors. Staying here means that you get to experience it in the mornings and evenings when it is generally fairly quiet and you can really enjoy the surroundings and the handful of local restaurants and cafes. For us, that was one of the best reasons to stay here. It is also a great location for days out around the region, to Basle in Switzerland (40 minutes by car) and also across the Rhine into Germany (30-40 minutes by car) being fairly central. From the UK, it is easy and fairly quick to get to with Eurostar into Strasbourg or cheap flights to Basle Airport then local transport.

We were pleasantly surprised by our stay, especially for the price. The rooms were nice, clean, and spacious enough, with the added convenience of parking and being super close to the tram. The breakfast was absolutely delicious! Even though we expected to share a bathroom, we were happy to find a shower in the room, only the toilets were shared.
