Cathedral is great. The roman ruins are pretty good. The town is wonderful to walk around in. In the evening everyone was gone and the streets were quiet and wonderful. Avallon is an attractive market town in northern Burgundy.
Avallon is an attractive market town in northern Burgundy. It is immersed in beautiful countryside, and is of a manageable size for walking around, sampling the shops, cafes, and restaurants, and enjoying the Burgundian architecture. It is quiet in May. Vézelay is a crazy place.
Vézelay is a crazy place. It is hyped up in every tourist guide on the Bourgogne you can find, but it is actually a one street village on the top of a mountain whose only attraction is an oversized cathedral on the Way of St. James, and some tourist shops for decorative arts (if you like that). Rural exodus is unmistakable, there are several buildings for sale, and the ladies who run the hotel where we stayed told us that the village has only 70 regular inhabitants left, the rest are pilgrims and tourists. We only stayed for one night, passing through on our way back home, and for us it was perfect as it was. The hotel (Les Glycines) was great, very recommendable, the surrounding landscape is beautiful and possibly nice to explore wandering (we didn't try). Vézelay also seems to be a hot spot for pilgrims who find company there.Guest review bySusanneGermany - 8.0

Nice little town. Excellent base to visiting the Morvan. Many walks nearby. Wonderful places to visit: Autun, Avallon, Semur-en Auxois, Vezelay***, Auxerre. Beautiful lakes. The town boasts one of the best restaurants of France, if not the whole world. It is truly mythical. But it will cost you an arm and a leg. Clamecy is a friendly and attractive town with a well-preserved medieval core. It is an ideal location for cycling along the Canal de Nivernais and into the surrounding countryside. It has a surprisingly wide range of eating places for such a small town. There is an interesting local museum with an impressive art and archaeological collection as well as a fascinating display about 'Les Flotteurs'. They were skilled woodsmen who floated rafts of firewood up to Auxerre and on to Paris - and who formed an interesting and quite radical rural subculture. I had a fairly dramatic stay in that I had mild sunstroke on my first day's cycling and was taken to the local hospital for a check-up by the paramedics.
