I stayed at Beechwood on my way from Belfast to Edinburgh, (and from the Isle of Skye to Belfast) it's about an hour and a bit by bus from Cairnryan (the ferry port). The hotel is a little over a mile from the bus terminus on the main road that goes out of Ayr. It took me about 40 minutes to walk with my luggage to the hotel as my GPS steered me wrong. I did it in 20 min without luggage. Ayr is a small town but has quite a selection of places to eat. I ate at Sherkan (an Indian restaurant that does more take out as their eating-in is adequate but not elegant. The food was good, but their cheese nan was like a large cheese pizza. In the morning I took the train to Edinburgh. The train stop was less than 5 minutes from Beechwood and the manager showed me where it was and printed out the train schedule for me. I visited the local Sainbury's which was only 15min walk from the hotel and picked up some fresh bread from a small local bakery on my way back.Guest review byGary/ FaithUnited States - 10.0

I love Irvine, the beach is beautiful and you have facilities there as well which is perfect, especially if you are taking children. I love the wee cafes along Harbour street but my favourite is Small Talk, love this cafe. The home baking is delicious! They also have a gluten free selection of cakes. I highly recommend you try this wee place. You have everything you need close by, its such a beautiful place.Guest review byKellyUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Largs in beautiful for the views.
Largs in beautiful for the views. Going over too the island takes just a few minutes on the ferry and definitely worth a visit as its stunning. Fish and Chips from Fish works is the absolute best!! If you love haggis, try the viking chip shop for amazing battered haggis. Lots of different shops fro gifts and lots of charity shops if you like hunting for bargains. Beautiful little sweet shop too on the High Street. We went for the Viking Festival and although it was good, I don't think you need to spend the money on the tickets too see the burning of the boat because by the time you have got through the crowds too the ticket area the boat has already been burnt. Food and drinks at the festival stores are expensive but delicious. There are loads of market stalls there too selling all homemade items and cakes etc. The viking village is worth a visit too if that's your thing. Largs its self is lovely on a quite day. There is a large morriosns store within a few minutes drive from the centre or there is also coop and tesco express stores in the town centre. Largs is perfect from exploring that part of Scotland as lots too see within a short drive. I'm not sure about family activities as I don't have children.Guest review byKayleighUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Charming village on a beautiful bay, with views of the tallest peak on the island. Many interesting little shops, a terrific bakery, and a pub. But too few places are open to eat in the evenings. Easy to shop for groceries for self-catering.Guest review byEugeneUnited States - 8.0
I really liked Dean Castle and Kay Park.
I really liked Dean Castle and Kay Park. The Dick Institute is well worth the visit, nice to see the Johnny Walker exhibit. My Dad was a cooper for Walkers and brought back great memories. Since I grew up in Kilmarnock, much of the city is familiar so visiting the houses and streets that I frequented were a trip down memory lane. I enjoyed seeing the Burns Monument looking good once again. I have family photos of it being built and relatives enjoying visiting it in the 1960's. I could have spent more time in Kilmarnock and Riccarton exploring family history, maybe next time.Guest review byStuartUnited States - 10.0
