The Peaceful Garden of England
The so-called Garden of England, Kent is known for its lush greenery. Although within easy reach of London, it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle. So much so, that at many Kent hotels, spa facilities come as standard. One is, unsurprisingly, in the sophisticated spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Nearby in Lamberhurst is medieval Scotney Castle, surrounded by a moat. Also moat-bound and with Kent accommodation available on Booking.com are Hever Castle and Leeds Castle (the latter in a village not to be confused with the city of Leeds).
The county town is Maidstone, but its most famous city is Canterbury, whose magnificent cathedral is the seat of the Church of England’s highest post. Rochester also has an impressive cathedral.
To the west is Margate, one of the top Kent seaside towns. Other resorts with long beaches are Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Deal. Around the coastline, Dover is known for its white cliffs, castle and the ferries crossing the English Channel to France. To the west is the Channel Tunnel by Folkestone, and Eurostar trains from St Pancras also stop at Ashford inland.
Other popular Kent attractions are the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway, Brands Hatch motor racing circuit, and the conical oast houses so typical of this part of England.

I came to a gathering of the Cathedral Music Trust. The Cathedral could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Great range of music. Canterbury is very user friendly: huge choice of places to eat and drink and at reasonable prices. Lots and lots of history - the cradle of English Christianity. Everything is within a reasonable if not easy walking distance huge variety of early and later buildings: a living book on English architecture. Seething with humanity and vitality given the student population and closeness to continent. Note the prairy planting in the cathedral close. Folkestone has retained much of its old world charm.
Folkestone has retained much of its old world charm. It is a very old town with a lot of interesting history, from smuggling to being a main port for departure and arrival from France for many years. It is surrounded by gently rolling hills and is only about a 45 minute drive to Canterbury. Folkestone's main shopping street has many small shops as well as a Sainsbury, Asda and Lidl store all close by. The old high street is very picturesque with a steep slope and a cobbled road. Good choice of shops and restaurants. Good transport links if no car, i.e. regular buses for local trips or nearby towns including Hastings and Tunbridge and Railway Station (Hastings an hour away by train). The Dover Castle was lots of fun and was well organized for...
The Dover Castle was lots of fun and was well organized for visitors of all ages. The war tunnels on the other hand were poorly organized and should be reorganized in order to help make them more interesting. The films on the walls explaining the historical events were difficult to understand due to the echo. The significance of the tunnels could be made more hands on for the younger generation to grasp. I have to say that Gravesend is not the prettiest of towns...
I have to say that Gravesend is not the prettiest of towns with many derelict buildings. The most impressive building in the town is the Sikh Temple. The town is very busy with traffic but is fairly easy to navigate around. We stayed in a very pleasant guest house outside of town which was perfect for going to Leo's Music Venue. This is the only reason we came to Gravesend. We ate at The Three Daws pub which has been pretty good on both times we visited. Traditional British Pub with a good British Menu. Love seaside towns -they are all different and have their own charms and Whitstable has lovely little independant shops and eating places. The beach goes on for miles. Got lost when left train station and 3 lots of people very helpful when I asked for directions. In the 70's Margate/Cliftonville was fabulous a hive of activity...the beaches was jam packed with people...the high street was fabulous..but now high street has hardly anything shops a lady stopped me to ask where the high street was...I said your in it...! Very sad looking area now... Where the pier used to be there's now some awful modern monstrosity of a building looking like metal huge boxes...supposedly an art gallery I heard...really awful looking 😖 Around to Cliftonville the Winter gardens looked derelict as well as the Lido area...and the Llidoo swimming pool was filled in with cement donkeys years ago and the walls of pool are now falling into the sea..sad!...when I think back how these places was a hive off activity and all guest houses packed...now your hard pushed to find one...but i did and it was greatGuest review bySusanUnited Kingdom
