FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

- From US$297.07 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 526 reviewsOur lake view room was large, and very comfortable. Fabulous scenery, just sit and enjoy the entire vista. A big bathroom with both bath and shower, and a magnified mirror....(I love that for putting on the makeup!) The breakfast was absolutely delicious, 100% to the breakfast chef and staff, all the staff were friendly and courteous and welcoming. We had dinner in the restaurant, again it was really lovely, and the waiter was very helpful in recommending a wine to compliment our main course. Will definitely stay here on our next visit to the beautiful Lake District.Guest review byRoseIreland
- From US$242.51 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.8Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 88 reviewsA great room plus luxurious bathroom including a huge walk-in shower plus separate bath, the layout of this converted barn was well thought out, and the facilities were top-notch. Very friendly staff and owners. The car battery failed, and the owners kindly came to pick us up from where we were stranded. Just around the corner of Wasdale, with one of the best hiking options and dramatic scenery to be found in Lake District/England. Would recommend.Guest review byBronneNetherlands

Access to walking paths direct from the hotel. Parking available on site. We had a nice and relatively large room with a view to the bunnies....The staff was very nice.Guest review byTamarIsrael

Windermere town centre is small but has plenty of cafes and restaurants to meet all food lovers types. There are a good selection of shops for gifts etc. and all are within a few hundred yards and not too far from the railway station or buses to travel to other parts of the lakes. It is also a 10 to 15 minute walk to Bowness (downhill) which is also the place to hop on to the lake boats or alternative dining or shopping and the Beatrix Potter experience. My pictures are of the lake side in BownessGuest review byNigelUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Keswick is a beautiful laid back town with lovely restaurants and coffee shops. Fantastic hiking on its door step and great facilities for a small town. We went to the theatre and had a wonderful evening. What makes Keswick so charming is the people, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Coming from Ireland where people generally are very friendly it was refreshing to see a similar outlook amongst the locals. It is obviously a dog lovers paradise and it attracts a lovely visitor- everyone was so nice, perhaps the atmosphere in the town contributed to this- certainly no larger louts about so I think the town has got the mix just right- we like to visit new places but we will certainly make an exception and come back to KeswickGuest review byAndyIreland - 10.0

Has a nice period 'feel'.
Has a nice period 'feel'. Lots of one-off shops and very few national chain stores. Quite hilly, which could be challenging in slippery conditions. The promenade provides an excellent, uncluttered walk along the marshy coastline, particularly in good weather. Lots of great, family-run restaurants and 'eating pubs'. Provides a civilised alternative to the popular holiday resorts.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom
