Indonesia's Laid-back Lombok
A great alternative to busy Bali is lazy Lombok, a more authentic representation for tourists who wish to explore one of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands. It is separated from its naughty neighbor by the Lombok Strait to the east and from Sumbawa by the Alas Strait to the west.
Lombok is a typical island paradise of paddy fields, pristine beaches, jungle escapes and mountain retreats. It is largely inhabited by the local Sasak people with a small percentage of Balinese settlers.
Many hotels on Booking.com are centred around the capital of Mataram and the beaches stretching along the north-eastern coastline, including the sweeping bays of Senggigi. Medana Bay is another great northern location for people wanting to visit the nearby Gili Islands, a wonderful snorkeling location and nightlife choice.
Escape the tropical heat in the mountains surrounding Gunung Rinjani, an active volcano where tourists can break in their newly acquired trekking shoes. Other adventures abound on the southern surf beaches of Lombok.
Lombok International Airport is located 33 km south-west from Mataram and services daily flights mainly from Jakarta and Bali. This round-shaped island is approximately 80 km in both directions and offers plenty of variety for a great holiday.

I got the Mountain View room and managed to catch glimpses of the sunset over Mount Agung a few nights. Incredible views and service all around. The room was very comfy and cozy and I slept really well throughout my 4D3N stay. The staff at Svarga were incredibly attentive and hospitable and attended to all of my asks and queries - they also helped arrange a motorbike booking for me upon request. Breakfast at their in-house restaurant was really good too. I see alot of negative reviews about the water pressure/temperature or bugs being in the facilities but I didn't have that experience. There was a few bugs/ small lizards here and there esp in the bathroom but I think that's normal considering that the shower is in open air and below trees, as the resort is located right in the middle of palm trees and forestry. I really appreciate the maintenance of the resort, considering that it's 10 years old. They took us on a daytrip to discover Lombok island for a very good price and we were able to see some places we would have never seen if we had been travelling alone. The room was gigantic and the outdoor bathroom was incredible. The location is right in front of the beach and is possible to enjoy the sunset from there. Make sure you bring beach shoes because of the corals, since is difficult to enter the sea without them. They rent bikes for very accessible value and is definitely worth to rent a bike and tour around the island. The food was delicious. We definitely recommend the Indonesia Rijstafel. Staying in Gili T for 2 days was the best decision of our Bali trip! The whole vibe of the island is so cozy and calm. There are no cars, you can bicycle around the island or get a scooter. The beaches are beautiful and sunsets on the west side are breathtaking. We had a fantastic stay at Gili Meno Mojo Beach Resort. Our room (Deluxe Beach Front) was well equipped with tea/coffee making facility, drinking water and very efficient air con and a TV. The bed was super comfy and we both had the best nights sleep we’ve had in ages. We could step out of our room onto the beach and the snorkelling (straight off the beach) was amazing, with the greatest diversity of fish species that we’ve ever seen. We could sit in the restaurant area watching turtles poke their heads up through the water whilst enjoying the complimentary afternoon tea. Chriest was so helpful, making sure everything was OK, giving us lots of information about Indonesian life and sorting out our onward travel. Jo and Linjang were also super friendly with always time for a chat. The chef cooked delicious meals……I particularly enjoyed the grilled mahi mahi fish and my husband loved the red fish curry and the breakfasts were lovely but there were other restaurants close by if you chose to eat somewhere else. The local family who manage Green Haven Homestay are so welcoming and friendly. They will do almost anything to cater for travellers, for example I am 68 and wouldn’t have been able to do the 6 km walking tour up and down hills and uneven surfaces so they organised a motorbike tour which was great. The tour of the villages was also good and very interesting and informative to see the local market, pottery being made, textile weaving and bamboo weaving. There was a good variety of food and the family dinner was wonderful, so much delicious local food. The accommodation was suitable in a peaceful environment. Selong belanak is a charming location with friendly locals and great food! Main beach Munah is buzzing with people holidaying and learning to surf With Warungs along the beach you can grab a board or a cold Bintang and enjoy the water Homestays are the way to go but there are also Also beachfront restaurants and resort style places. Was exhausted after Mt. Rinjani climb and this impacted on my exploration of the wider area, which I would've liked to have done more of. Also despite being officially the 'dry season', the weather was often overcast and rainy. I think had things been slightly different and I had had more time, the experience would have been better.. Strawberry picked was fun. Look at google maps to find places with at least 5 good reviews to find somewhere to go. Hiking Pergasagan Hill and spending the night was amazing!
