- From $108.49 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.2Very Good - What previous guests thought, 68 reviewsTaman Simalem Resort was one of the highlights of our trip to Sumatra! We stayed for just one night in the Waterfall Superior Room, but it left such a lasting impression. Initially, we thought the price was a bit steep, but once we arrived, we completely understood—it’s worth every penny. The resort is massive and immaculately maintained. You truly feel like you’ve stepped into another world. We especially loved how green and natural everything was, with their own coffee and tea plantations. The produce was fantastic—we even brought some English Breakfast tea home, and I can’t recommend it enough! We also LOVED the breakfast! The staff went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. The room was spacious, and the bed was incredibly large and cozy. The restaurant in the Waterfall Bungalows area was absolutely charming, and the food was excellent. If you’re looking for a serene escape surrounded by nature, this resort is a must-visit!Guest review byterriblychicGermany

Medan is an interesting city with a mix of different cultures - Batak, Javanse Achenese, Chinese. There are some excellent restaurants - in the old China Town. I recommend Cambridge Mall for Restaurants and Cinemas. I also recommend visiting Berastagi , 3 hours by car. A charming Hill station where they grow beautiful flowers and fruits.Guest review byPeter W JacksonUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Tuk Tuk is mainly where beginner tourists stay, just like me. Tuk Tuk has many restaurants, cafes, hotels, resorts, homestays and guesthouses. Those are located along the main road at Tuk Tuk as well. If you do not want to spend on cafes and restaurants, no worries, there are convenient stores and shops along the main road. Very simple. But I would suggest people go to the restaurant and eat their local cuisines and seafood for the better. The only downside is the main road of Tuk Tuk is very troublesome and tough to walk and cycle as it is very steep going up and down. It is not a road that is stable. I would recommend people take a motorbike, scooter or car to travel along the main road.Guest review byRachelSingapore - 10.0

We just left and are already thinking about when we'll return. We've experienced a wonderful place: its people, its jungle, its culture. We've always been greeted with smiles, joy, and support from the entire town. The food is always great! And what can we say about the surroundings? We're nature lovers, so there couldn't be a better place. We'll definitely be back! We stayed in Eriono, an unbeatable location. We also stayed at the Garden Inn. But there are many good places and plenty of places to eat or drink. Getting around Bukit is very easy; you can walk everywhere, but if not, you can take a motorbike, tuk-tuk, or car; anything is possible. What we really liked was the four-day trek through the jungle, and being able to observe orangutans was magical.Guest review byVanesaTorricoSpain - 2.0
Cesspool!! Open sewers everywhere.
Cesspool!! Open sewers everywhere. The whole town stinks of human and animal waste. Very dirty, trash everywhere. Hostile environment towards outsiders and tourists. Locals openly abuse animals all the time. Impossible to safely consume any food that is not pre-packaged from a Western brand. Consuming anything local or freshly made carries a high risk of infections, parasites, and diseases. No soap anywhere. Everyone tries to cheat you. Hike with Berastagi Adventures is an exception. They are good guides.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Busy port town, must be organised to get to the from places on time and not many places are walkable to and from. Good central point for exploring other parts of the area, but not the main attraction itself.Guest review byFaigl - 6.0

Medan is a big, noisy, dusty city. Nothing to do here or no memorable sights, although the mosques are pleasant to lok at. Enough shopping malls though to pass a day. Easy to get around as GRAB. Non meat eaters can find it difficult to find somewhere good to eat.Guest review byRosemarieUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Bukit Lawang is one of my most favourite places on the planet. It is like stepping back in time. People are so friendly and welcoming. You probably need 5 days there to explore and trek. Well worth itGuest review bySusanCambodia - 8.0

The volcano hike was amazing and so beautiful, but there wasn’t much else to do after that. If in a straight couple or a mixed gender group it might be more pleasant to wander around and explore the the town, but as a solo woman or two women it was quite uncomfortable in terms of the amount of attention and harassment we received. If I went again I would just arrive in the afternoon, do the hike in the AM, and then head off again after that.Guest review bySaraUnited Kingdom - 4.0

We went to Medan solely so we could visit the Orangutans in the wild - we were totally successful in this enterprise. Only one day was required in visiting Mount Leuser National Park. Three tourist sites stood out for us - they could all be visited in one further full day: Tjong A Fie Mansion Maximum Palace Rahman International Wildlife Museum (quite expensive at Rp 300,000 each) We spent 6 nights in Medan - we could have done it all easily in 3 nights! Compared with other Far-East cities, Medan lags behind in tourism preparedness.Guest review byGraemeUnited Kingdom
