Stunning Scenery and Remarkable Ruins
Wonderful beach resorts, a wealth of history and winding, cliff-hugging roads – these are just a few reasons why Campania is so admired.
Spreading around a bay, the capital Naples is a mix of monumental architecture and narrow streets. Known for pizza and pulsating life night and day, it extends along the coast towards Pozzuoli, site of a Roman amphitheatre and the Phlegrean Fields volcanic area.
The most notorious volcano is of course Vesuvius, whose eruption in 79AD destroyed Pompei and Herculaneum. The ruins of both are an amazing insight into the sophistication of the Romans. Even older are the well-preserved Greek temples at Paestum.
Agropoli sits on a rocky promontory overlooking a beach and harbour, and beautiful Palinuro is at the tip of the Cilento National Park. Other fantastic Campania resorts are on the amazing Amalfi Coast. Ravello, high on a hill, offers stunning coastal views, while Amalfi and Positano cascade down to the sea. Around the peninsula is Sorrento, home to several 5-star Campania hotels, while offshore are the fabulous islands of Capri and Ischia.

There are so many other great spots in Italy. Naples is NOT one of them. Go somewhere else to really enjoy this country. Sorrento is close, even Rome is better. The country side is where it is really beautiful. Naples is a dirty city with street vendors everywhere.Guest review byschutz - 10.0

Sorrento was a great base for the Amalfi Coast and Naples area. You won’t feel trapped here because there are trains, buses and ferries at your disposal. Sorrento was busy but not overwhelmingly packed like Positano, for example. In the evenings it was relaxing because day trippers were gone. It is flat compared to other coast towns as well, which is nice when you spend a lot of time in Italy walking! There are so many golden nuggets on this Island that we only touched the tip of what it had to offer. One could easily spend a fortnight here and come away with having experienced so much diversity and uniqueness unlike you would get on a normal beach Island holiday. Giardini la Moretella was very inspiring as were our visits to Forio and St. Angelo. Had we stayed longer we may have done some of the beaches/thermal spas and headed further up the mountains having hired a car.Beware of the buses! Convenient and cheap but not good if you have mobility issues as seats rarely available and lots of twists and turns. Have ended up with bruises so not a comfortable ride. We really loved all the cultural and historic places within the city and especially enjoyed the walkway along the ocean. As vegetarians, we appreciated the number and variety of restaurants and types of food available; in fact, we enjoyed some of the best Indian food we've ever had. Capri is great to explore via taxi, get up early and head up to Ana Capri, less traffic more intimate area. The chair lift is a must to the top of the mountain, and lunch up top of the mountain is amazing. Great base for visiting other villages along the coast. Pretty town with plenty of small shops for gifts and ceramics. Wide range of restaurants, busy ones on the central square and secluded ones up steps and in alleys - all full of character. Limited suppplies for apartment cooking so we had to eat out for all meals but prices the same as UK. La Perla restaurant made excellent gluten free pizza! I loved Positano, the people, the vibe, the culture and the beauty. I highly recommend going and staying in the heart of it all. I always felt safe and comfortable. I always walked at night and never had an issue. There's lots to see and do. I took in a sunset cruise, such an incredible way to see the coastline. The food is amazing, always fresh ingredients. Caserta is a pleasant ordinary town. The Royal Palce is jaw dropping and it is a 8E return train ride from Naples. With a car, there are many fantastic Roman sites and a spectacular coastline within 30k. Anacapri is way quieter than Capri.
Anacapri is way quieter than Capri. I see that as a good thing. Anacapri gets busy during the day with all the day trippers... Thanks to the gondola, Blue grotto etc. But once they leave... that's when Anacapri shines. We loved the quiet evenings, the amazing sunsets, the now empty swimming holes...
