A Haven of Alpine Tranquillity
Surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Alps, Lake Como is a long, thin lake in the shape of an inverse ‘Y’. At its south-west corner is the beautiful town that it’s named after – Como. A short train ride from Milan, this is the starting point for several Lake Como cruises. If you take the funicular railway up to Brunate you get magnificent views of the lake and mountains, towards Switzerland just to the west.
The laidback and sophisticated way of life makes Como Lake popular with celebrities and several have homes in exclusive Bellagio, which is almost entirely surrounded by water. The views here are breathtaking, so it’s easy to see why of all the Lake Como hotels, Bellagio has the greatest concentration.
Just across the water are Lenno, Tremezzo and Menaggio, home to many exclusive lakefront hotels, many with swimming pools. You can actually swim in some parts of the lake, and the best beaches are found in the area near Gravedona in the north. Fanning out around a small harbour, this town offers some of the best Lake Como watersports.

He was very interested to the point that he felt that I did not ask him to change the room and he waited for me until I returned at night and changed the room for me and upgraded me to a room without any additional fees, a junior room, and its code was stunning overlooking the street and the city of Como and Lake Como. The room is very beautiful to the point that you can sit in it and it is enough to go out for a walk. Mr. Mattia was also important and explained the tourist places in the city of Como. He also came to me at early breakfast time. He is a very interested person in his work and hardworking. The same personality as Mr. Mattia has a bright future of distinction, development and attracting tourists. This is a rare type of official and you will rarely find him with his efficiency and he is a distinguished supervisor of a workplace and his quality is very upscale. Also, before leaving for vacation, he gave me his private number card in case I faced any problem in the hotel and vice versa, everything was fine. Also, when I left the hotel, I was explained the tourist places in Milan. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. Mattia, and I advise everyone. Perfect base for day hikes in the surrounding mountains. The restaurant is top quality, not too pricey, and seems to be popular also among locals. The views from the terrace are magnificent! Be aware though, the place is very remote – getting around without a car is very difficult and requires planning. There is a bus connection to the nearest village but it only runs a few times per day and not on Sundays or public holidays. The walk from the bus stop is 3 km uphill. You may get a free ride from the nearest bus stop to the agriturismo if you call them in advance, but they don’t offer this service on weekends. Como is absolutely over crowded with tourists, this was mid October. It was a 45-60 minute queue waiit to buy a ferry ticket and same to get on if your lucky. Beautiful town, definitely worth a visit. So much to see and do, very relaxed and enjoyable stay. Lecco is in the south part of Lake Como, but from almost all the cities that we look around the Lake, apart from Bellagio, Lecco is the most picturesque because the mountains chain in the Background. Is simply breathtaking. The city itself has nice restaurants, stores and the walk around the lake is fantastic. Is served from a Train station the reaches Milan and the airports in few times, make it easy to depart and come from overseas. It was an excellent stay and really liked staying in Menaggio and moving everytime to another place. The two best locations to stay are Menaggio or Bellagio. It's a cute town with some lovely restaurants and easy enough to walk around for someone of average fitness. However if your purpose is to explore most of Lake Como, you will be limited to the slow ferry up to Bellagio / Varenna / Menaggio which takes 2-3hours. We had originally booked to stay in Varenna but cancelled due to works on the train line to get there. It still would have been a better option, or just staying in Como town to access the fast ferry. I’d definetly book this place again, great views. It was fairly easy to get to and from, bit of a long journey but didn’t mind. The staff were great and the other people staying were nice to very international and friendly oh and I loved seeing peoples dogs but I’m not sure if they were staying there?
