- From $82.27 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very Good - What previous guests thought, 1,314 reviewsThe location can not be beat. Our view of the canal was gorgeous and made the stay in Otaru. The room was larger than any we stayed in while in Japan and the lobby was beautiful. Staff were all very friendly despite us being English speaking. If you've ever been an American in Otaru, that can be hard to find. Very walkable to a lot of restaurants. We were sad we could only stay one night, as there were a couple places in the warehouses across the canal we didn't get a chance to check out. I'm sure it's mainly for tourists but if you're having trouble finding a restaurant, we highly recommend walking to Denuki Koji. We had an incredible dinner experience at a tiny Yakitori restaurant there.Theres an onsen at the hotel that I regrettably didn't get a chance to visit but it looks beautiful. Definitely the place to stay if you want to be close to the canal and within walking distance to many historic Otaru spots.Guest review byallysonUnited States
- From $488.28 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 1,522 reviewsThe location was fantastic & the hotel is new. It’s a busy hotel filled with tourists but it was nice that they had a higher category of rooms on one ‘royal floor’ which had bigger rooms with private in-room onsens. Pretty much every amenity is provided for in the room, from a well stocked complimentary minibar right down to dyson hairdryers, sleeping gowns & pyjamas, indoor & ‘outdoor’ slippers. The hotel encourages you to wear their pyjamas (super comfy) & slippers when wandering abt in the hotel, even going to breakfast in them which was super fun to do! The breakfast buffet is fantastic there too! Oh you can also borrow a special choice of pillow (25 different types to choose from) to use during your stay. Really enjoyed our stay there!Guest review byIrene Ai-LengMalaysia

Most interesting places like Furano, Daisetsuzan and noboribetsu are not close to Sapporo even with self-drive trips. So don’t base your self in Sapporo as it is far from its own airport anyway. Stay in Sapporo if you want to explore its surrounding areas.Guest review byChangAustralia - 8.0

Hakodate per se is a quaint lite town, whose main attractions can be visited in one day. However, it can serve as a hub for exploring southern Hokkaido as it has all the necessary services. Food is certaiy a plus, particularly seafood, and prices are lower than elsewhere. Also, compared to larger towns on Honshu, it has a frontier-type of vibe.Guest review byArielSlovenia - 10.0

We loved Asahikawa, a very fun little city with a huge variety of bars and restaurants, easy access to local ski resorts, lots to see and do, and just a really fun, friendly vibe. Was a nice change after the hectic pace of Niseko. We will return next year and give ourselves a bit more time to have a really good look around (could do with 7 nights - our stay was 4 nights). Enjoyed the bonus of the winter festival being on during our stay, with spectacular ice sculptures the whole length of the main street, plus a big festival zone with activities, a huge ice stage, and dozens of food vans. We will be back for sure.Guest review byNicholasAustralia - 10.0

We did glass blowing at a great place called Il Ponte - made a glass each to take home! Also spent an afternoon Kayaking nearby at Shioya beach with Max at Sunnyside Up -well worth doing with amazing scenery and even a swim at a beach! Also found a great little place for dinner that locals go to called Summi's Grill in a little back alley near the Sun arcade. Met a couple of locals who go there every day!Guest review byPhilipAustralia - 10.0

Chitose being a small city in Hokkaido is convenient with the new airport just within a short travel time to reach. There are a lot food choices and moderate shopping available within nearby distance.Guest review byTANSingapore - 10.0
We've been twice to Furano.
We've been twice to Furano. It's a wonderfully friendly and relaxed resort. While it's not large by European or American standards, it features fabulously dry powder snow, and great restaurant options at the foot of the slopes and in the adjacent town. The fact that it is small also makes it easy to meet up with friends.Guest review byStephenAustralia - 8.0
Kushiro is a compact city.
Kushiro is a compact city. When I was there in February 2024 the city was fairly quiet. Kushiro is a good place to stay if you are interested in seeing the Red crowned-cranes (Tancho). The Akan International Crane Center is just over an hour away by public bus. It's also possible to travel to the wetlands and the many lakes in the area. The Kushiro City Museum is very good with displays of the natural history, geology and Tancho. There are also wonderful sunsets that can be seen in various parts of the city.Guest review byNeilThailand - 10.0

For a two day trip to Noboribetsu, we enjoyed the hiking, scenery, and shopping near our hotel. The natural hot springs there are also quite unique - semi translucent in appearance. We really enjoyed soaking in it.Guest review byDennisUnited States - 10.0

Very beautiful and quaint little town. Loved the hot foot and hand spas for the public. Views of the lake were amazing and the onsen with the cost of our room was worth it. Better to stay since it is much more beautiful than at Rusutsu Resort area and not that far to go snowboarding.Guest review byKenUnited States - 8.0

Less touristy than other places in Japan, but a good base for visiting places like Furano, Hakodate, Noboribetsu. We went there during the summer festival which was great, and the shopping centre at the main station is very good.Guest review byDanielUnited Kingdom
