It is far, so remember to book dinner at the hotel in advance. You can reach the Beppu roapway quite easily by local bus though (suica card works btw). The dinner (wagyu meal set) and breakfast were excellent and the chef very accommodating as my friend is a pescetarian and does not eat meat, so he prepared a dinner and breakfast with no meat just for her. The rooms are very nice, spacious and clean with a great view over Beppu and the bay. We slept very well on the tatami style mattress and the open air bathroom with access to the hot springs water was so relaxing and nice. 100% recommend!Guest review bySabrina BiancaGermany

Beppu was one of the highlights of our trip. We flew in and out of Fukuoka and while its nothing compared to other major Japanese cities we have visited, Beppu provided us with really good onsens and very good Oita food which we truly miss til this day!Guest review byBTSingapore - 8.0

Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. Onta Yaki Pottery Village was a terrific day trip, although we did have to take a long taxi ride to get there. The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition. I loved this town and could easily live here. I was lucky enough to catch Ukai (cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River while enjoying a dinner cruise). It has a laid-back vibe, with some excellent dining options close to the station. When driving into Beppu, I figured it was just another town.
When driving into Beppu, I figured it was just another town. It was towards the end of 3 weeks driving around Kyushu and we were weary! While people come here for the Seven Hells, we found Beppu to be quite charming. Although quiet, we thought it had a lovely vibe and some busy restaurants to choose from in the evening. The hells are touristy and there are a couple I probably wouldn’t recommend but it’s what Beppu is known for. We went to Yufuin and Beppu, Yufuin by the touristy train (book a month earlier and reserve your seats!), then we took the bus from Yufuin to Beppu and did the onsen tours on our own by bus.
