The hotel is well located , close to the clan jetties, walkable to most tourist attractions, close to many restaurants. The staff are very helpful and always smiling. The rooms were spacious and clean. One of them had an amazing view of the sea. Security is good. The pool is clean but small - good for dipping to stay cool. The lush plants nearby make it relaxing. We had a very comfortable stay.

A Dream Stay at The Edison – Penang’s Best Boutique Hotel! From the moment we arrived at The Edison, we were swept away by its charm and elegance. This boutique hotel, housed in a beautifully restored historic mansion, feels like stepping into a piece of Penang’s rich heritage – but with all the modern comforts you could ever want. The location is simply unbeatable: right in the heart of George Town’s UNESCO heritage center, making it effortless to explore the city’s colorful streets, historic landmarks, and vibrant food scene. The interiors are absolutely gorgeous. Every detail, from the grand entrance to the tranquil courtyard, has been lovingly preserved and tastefully updated. Our room was spacious, airy, and refreshingly cool – a perfect retreat after wandering through the tropical heat. The pool is a hidden jewel – calm, inviting, and surrounded by lush greenery. We spent hours there unwinding. And the complimentary all-day lounge? What a fantastic idea! Whether you need a quick snack, a cold drink, or just a quiet corner to relax, it’s always available and beautifully stocked. But what truly elevates The Edison to a class of its own is the exceptional staff. They are the very soul of this hotel – warm, professional, and endlessly helpful. From the front desk to the housekeeping team, every single person we encountered went out of their way to make us feel welcome and cared for. Their restaurant recommendations were outstanding, and they gave us wonderful tips for excursions that made our stay unforgettable. The Edison isn’t just a hotel – it’s an experience. It combines heritage, comfort, and a level of hospitality that is rare to find. We travel often, but few places have left such a lasting impression. If you’re visiting Penang, don’t even think twice. Stay at The Edison. It’s hands down the best hotel in the city, and we can’t wait to come back!

FAQs about hotels in Penang

A Palm-Lined Pearl

An island and part of the mainland make up the small Malaysian region of Penang, also known as the ‘pearl of the Orient’. It has long been coveted and the capital Georgetown has many elegant Colonial buildings. The observation deck of the KOMTAR tower – the tallest building – offers spectacular views of the town and surrounding mountains.

A funicular railway goes up to Penang Hill deep in the forest. Nearby Air Itam has one of Asia’s largest Buddhist temples - Kek Lok Si – lit by hundreds of lights at night. Another fantastic temple is Taoist Kong Hock Keong in Georgetown.

Penang Airport is near southern Bayan Lepas, and across the Malacca Strait is Pulau Jerejak, a peaceful island where trees merge into ocean.

In the much livelier north, Batu Feringghi is the largest resort, with lots of Penang hotels on the beach, plenty of bars and a night market. East, green mountains slope down to blue waters at Tanjung Bungah, where several high-rise hotels overlook the palm-lined beach towards the Floating Mosque just offshore.

On the mainland Butterworth is the departure point for ferries to Penang island, and has a bird park housing a large number of Malaysian species. Wherever you decide to stay, Booking.com has a fantastic range of Penang hotels and apartments to choose from.

Nice hotel with a very nice beach front. Room was clean and comfortable with balcony and sea view. The breakfast was a bit overpriced for Malaysian prices, but the resort is focusing on western clientele (Australia?) and thus the prices are a bit higher. There is a nice restaurant right on the beach offering good food and drinks. Local food is available right in front of the hotel. There is a bus stop very near the hotel. It takes about 1 hr to get to Georgetown and about 10 minutes to the National Park. Busses go every15-20 minutes, but sometimes irregularly and waiting time is 30 minutes. Overall a very nice place to stay on Penang island.

It's definitely a family hotel, I have never been to a hotel with such a massive pool and water games, the kids enjoyed it and would love to come back, the staff were very welcoming and helpful as well. The trust level in the hotel is the best I have ever seen, I forgot my jewellery box with my diamond rings and they made sure it was safe and send it to me to KL free of charge, that's an amazing thing I would always be grateful for

I could feel the great nature of Penang in Malihom. Though the location is quite hard to get but when I finally get to Malihom I was totally satisfied with the whole things of Malihom. Facilities, view, and kind managers, private and peaceful atmosphere, nice food… Everything was far better than I expected. I would definitely like to recommend this place to someone who need to be cured from stressful mind.

George Town has a great range of options for accomodation and dining. There are dozens of heritage hotels and guest houses as well as modern hotels and airbnbs. There is food of many different kinds: hawker stalls, coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars all provide a variety of options at a range of price points. For transport, the town is more or less navigable by foot, and, depending on the time of day and time of year, Grab works well and is relatively inexpensive. The town also contains a number of interesting museums and historical buildings. It's history, heritage, architecture, and culture make it a unique and attractive tourist destination.

Batu Ferringhi, is a great place for a relaxing holiday in the warm. The food in Penang is the big drawcard. It is great for chilling out and leaving the stress behind. The Night Markets are also great. Best of all is Long Beach Cafe, which is a market place which opens in the evening and has the best food, cheap as chips. Great restaurants everywhere. Dont forget to go to Ferringhi Walk and Bora Bora for Dinner. Food, Glorious Food.

I stayed one night in Bukit Mertajam and overall, it was a decent short stop. The town has a quiet, local charm and isn’t too busy, which made it quite relaxing. There’s not a whole lot to do, but it’s a good place if you just want to unwind or try some local food—there are definitely some hidden gems when it comes to hawker stalls and small eateries. That said, it’s not really a tourist-heavy spot, so don’t expect major attractions or much nightlife. It’s more of a laid-back, pass-through kind of town. For one night, it was okay and served its purpose as a quick rest point.

    What I liked:

What I liked: The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly, and the location was convenient for getting around. What wasn’t the best: We stayed in a triple room, and the bathroom only had a single sliding door, which offered very little privacy. This setup felt unsuitable for multiple guests and made the stay a bit uncomfortable.

Lift service was poor and shared with Cleaner and laundry team. Delayed the whole process of the lift service which takes 20 to 30 minutes each wait. Noisy and the wall too thin. I like it because it is away from the traffic of Georgetown on the one side and from touristic Batu Ferringhi on the other. A handful of decent restaurants supplement the many informal local huts, giving all levels of cost and quality for variable dining. All the local folk are courteous and kindly, though English is universally poor to incomprehensible. Excellent modern buses connect with Georgetown etc. on a frequent, low-cost service. Car hire is not expensive and a liberating device for island discovery. Pop-up Fruit stalls abound for an exotic breakfast in your hotel room or on the beach. Meridien Hotel has the cleanest beach!

recently stayed at this Airbnb, and unfortunately, the experience was not great. The house is located very close to a mosque, and the loud prayers start at 6 AM daily, which is disruptive if you’re planning to sleep in. The house is also much smaller than expected for a double-storey unit. The living room is cramped and not ideal for hosting friends. All the rooms are small, and the kitchen is equally compact, so don’t expect much space here. A major inconvenience is the smart key system, which turns off the electricity when you leave the house. This means you can’t leave any devices charging or keep the air conditioning running while you’re out for lunch or dinner. Plus, there’s no air conditioning in the living room, which makes the space uncomfortable during hot days. Communication was another issue. The owner does not understand English and only speaks Malay, which made communication uncomfortable for me. On top of that, there is a CCTV camera outside the car porch, and the owner won’t allow you to turn off the modem, so it feels like you’re being constantly monitored. I found this quite unsettling. Lastly, the water pressure in the toilet is low, which was an additional disappointment. Overall, this stay was not as expected, and there are better options available for the price.
