There is more to Peru than Machu Picchu. Huaraz is the Kathmandu of Peru, and your door to some of the world's best hiking. Unless you have the DNA of Edmund Hillary in your blood, you may want to take advantage of tours instead of ball-busting hikes. Most hotels have options for you to sign up with. Really interesting city with great options for visiting a number of natural and historical sites: 2.5 hours to Chavin de Huantar, 2 hours to glaciers and mountain lakes. The city is teeming with travel operators to take you there - there are also colectivos at your own risk. Lots of restaurants of various cuisines, including both tourist-focused places and more local ones.
