Lots of souvenir shops, interesting port and marina area. Try 'Kid Creole' for some authentic cheap food, obviously with Dodo beer... Plage de L'Ermitage is worth a visit if you have time. Saint-Gilles les Bains is a working town: attached to a tourist area, yes, but a town nonetheless. The information office has friendly helpful staff to advise you, but you need to choose where to stay according to what you want to do. Reunion has a lot to offer, all in range of Saint-Gilles les Bains but best with a car. On a small island where no journey takes a long time, it is wasteful to be tied to timetables.
