Luckily there wasn’t too much refurbishing (as for now / Summer 2025) and one can only hope that future renovations will take place with consideration and in respect of the cultural heritage. The tiles in our bathroom were a bit disappointing, some random 90s design that didn’t fit the overall style of the hotel, besides that we were very happy to experience this place! (The shopping mall in front of the building should be torn down though, as it disrupts the original axis that was once created by the city planners…) Don’t miss to book breakfast to see the amazing original ceiling lighting in the restaurant-area! A recommendation, not only for architecture and design enthusiasts! Our main goal was visiting Mala Fatra mountain range - which was an excellent trip that we enjoyed very much - and traditional village Čičmany which was also a very interesting place. But, Žilina is also interesting place with very beautiful main square and lively restaurants with good food. From less ordinary places I can recommend visit to the railway station with some old signs from the times of Czechoslovakia and glass stained windows with motifs from the traditional folk culture. The garden close to the railway station (3 minute walk) is also nice with some interesting sculptures. If I would have 1-2 more days I would rent a bike and explore the town's side streets and suburbs in search of everyday's atmosphere, interesting details, murals, local caffes ... I find it in every place that I visit and I'm sure Žilina has a plenty of them.Guest review byVanjaCroatia - 10.0
An old provincial town nestled in a valley between forested...
An old provincial town nestled in a valley between forested hills. Although only a few streets of older houses remain, it has a special significance in the country's cultural history, with a good ethnographic museum that looks dilapidated from the outside but is excellent inside. To the south-east is an open-air country life museum, which looked promising although there wasn't enough time to visit it. Nearby to the west is the country's first Via Ferrata, an excellent challenge requiring about 2-3 hours to climb up, plus the return walk down. Nice, sweet place, easy to find.
Nice, sweet place, easy to find. It's packed with hotels and B&B's There is a grocery shop and a few stalls on the main square. Also a ping-pong table and man size chess on the square next to the ping-pong table. You can borrow the paddles and chess pieces from there somewhre, just ask at your hotel. We brought our paddles & ball so didn't need theirs. Would be worth visiting the SPA in Afrodita hotel, but we only stayed for 1 night and headed to the Lietava Castle in the morning. Turcianske Teplice is a tiny, but picturesque spa town.
Turcianske Teplice is a tiny, but picturesque spa town. It has an amazing large green park right in the centre, interesting historical buildings and, obviously, amenities featuring the town's renown thermal springs - a new Aqua park, old fashioned sanatorium, as well as a retro open air thermal swimming pools called 'Vieska'. Everything is within 5-10 mins walking distance, so there is no car needed for this trip. There is a decent choice of cafes and restaurants, good train connections, info centre and a couple of supermarkets. A beautiful small village on the edge of the Velka Fatra national park, one of the most scenic parts of Slovakia. Easy access to hiking, with bike and electric scooter hire available from several places in the village. Basic shopping facilities (if you're self-catering), but the towns of Martin & Turcianska Teplice are close by, with supermarkets. If you don't have a car, you'll be reliant on the local bus service that takes you to Martin (or, with a change, Turcianska Teplice). What a brilliant place to visit and even nicer people!! I hope I will continue to return for many more years and that I can find the time to stay longer in a future visit. The central town plaza is clean and pleasant with a wide variety of shops and places to eat. There are often public events that add to the strong sense of community. A town built to be lived in rather than for tourists.
A town built to be lived in rather than for tourists. Few landmarks, fountains or statues. However, as the regional capital it has excellent transport links to all the castles, caves, ski resorts and thermal spas you could ever hope for. Great shopping with three modern shopping malls and plenty of clubs, pubs and casinos for the evenings. There is a small zoo slightly out of town to the south. It is an old town so navigating the maze of streets may not be intuitive at first, but it is small enough that you shouldn't ever get too lost.Guest review byRyanUnited Kingdom
