If you're a European traveler, please heed my warning and avoid the hotel and the entire Alishan park. The park is just a huge tourist hotspot for elderly. The hotel is overpriced, the entry to the park is pricy and most of the park is artificial. The old trees are cool, sure. You will have a much better experience visiting the nearby mountains by yourself.Guest review byOndrejSwitzerland - 10.0

Shizhuo village is a great place to stay as it is on the main road between Chiayi and Alishan recreation area + it offers a beautiful trails. I had a chance to experience sunset and sunrise thanks to staying for one night and I visited all of the trails between Shizhuo and Fenqihu = Mist Trail, Sunset Trail, Sakura Trail (no cherries in the time of my visit unfortunately), Tea Trail, and Cloud Trail. I recommend reading more on a website Taiwanese Obsessed (https://www.taiwanobsessed.com/shizhuo/). I pushed myself on the second day of my stay and did sunrise, few of the trails, hike to the Dadongshan trail (beautiful forest, view on Mt. Jade and also monkeys!!!), walk to Fenqihu for lunch and Logging trail with giant tree and Cedar trail, spot the local scenis train while it was driving through the city, hitchhiked back to Shizuo as it was easier than waiting for bus and locals are very friendly to help and then finished my day and myself with the rest of the trails above Shizuo. For normal people I recommend maybe 2 nights stay for all of this as I had to be quick to make it all happen before going back to Chiayi. Bus service was very good on the main road, Fenqihu is very secluded and the bus comes only 2-3 times per day (but there is a train at 11:30 up to Shiztulu, village closer to Alishan recreation area - be careful, the train does not go all the way up to the area at this time!)Guest review byAnonymousCzech Republic - 10.0

If travelling with older folks (>50y/o above) who are not used to strenuous physical activities, I would recommend 3d2n stay in the area so that they can fully enjoy Alishan without feeling rushed, especially after the long winding drive up. Apart from the Alishan national park itself, I'd highly recommend going for the tea trail/ sakura trail/ mist trail around Shi Zhao Tea plantations in the morning if the weather is good.Guest review byX - 10.0
The best place to stay in if you’re visiting Alishan...
The best place to stay in if you’re visiting Alishan Recreational Park. The train station, electric bus pickup point, eateries, 7-11 are all within walking distances. I prefer taking the electric bus then the train. The ticket booth is just in front of the tourist service center. The bus will set off as soon as they have gotten a few passengers on board. For us the bus set off immediately almost every time. The 转角@小栈at the food mall was our favorite place for simple delicious meals. The rice cookies and mochi from日出商店 was delicious.Guest review byLim - 10.0
Breeze area with nature forest and Alishan tea hills.
Breeze area with nature forest and Alishan tea hills. Must visit! Really a recharge to be there. If you have time stay there 2 nights at least to explore the area and unwind yourself in the nature. 1 night is still too short.Guest review byCemiVietnam - 2.0
Ok sorry to say but very dissapointing. One day is enough.
Ok sorry to say but very dissapointing. One day is enough. Accommodation in whole area is small and no value. Town is old and dated. Restaurants old and dated and food just average. Railway station is great. The effort to get there is long and then very dissapointing. Needs a facelift. Only good for a day trip.Guest review byMichaelTaiwan - 10.0
Back to nature.
Back to nature. It has a lot of walking trails with awesome views. Love the tea oil Chicken and fried stream shrimps. Best to rent a car or book for private transport to travel around Alisan as the interval for public bus iS at least half an hour.Guest review byBee HoonSingapore
