How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewLovely warm, homemade scones for breakfast, if requested. :) Fionnula was very welcoming, and the room was so comfortable with everything you might possibly need for a visit to West Cork. So many nice touches throughout. I love the area on Colla Road for walks with beautiful views of Schull Harbour. I'll be back!

Verified reviewBeautiful property. Exceptionally clean. Immaculate bathroom with toiletries provided. Hairdryer also provided. The provision of bottled water was a lovely touch. Slept very well, bed very comfortable. Lovely outside terrace if you want to sit and chill. Very good location, only 5 mins walk to Schull High Street. We would definitely book again and Fionnuala is an outstanding host. Thank you very much.

Verified reviewThis immaculately clean and very tastefully decorated house is only a few minutes walk from the town. It's very quiet and comfortable, and ideal for either solo travellers or couples. There are lovely walks nearby too. All in all, excellent!

Verified reviewLovely welcome, spotless house, and a lovely sunny patio with the swifts getting ready to fly. We liked that there were no plastic jam/butter/ yoghurt pots, shampoo etc. Fionnuala has worked out ways to make things available generously, but in a low waste way. Lovely fresh scones.

Verified reviewThis conveniently located home stay is top class with a great host who is welcoming and helpful. The place is sparkling clean and you can see the effort the hosts make to maintaining the property to a high standard. The bedroom is well equipped and the mattress comfortable. Tea making facilities are in the room and the hosts ensure that fresh milk is available. Check in is welcoming.

Verified reviewWe were extremely disappointed with this guest house and believe that the information on Booking.com is misleading to guests. First of all, the listing states that there is a barbecue area available. In reality, guests are not allowed to use it. The host explicitly told us that she does not permit barbecues because “students might see it and also want to use it.” In other words, the barbecue area exists only “for show,” but guests are left misled and frustrated. If a facility is not available, it should not be advertised! Secondly, the so-called “fridge” in the room is simply ridiculous. It is so tiny that not even a standard bottle of wine fits inside — only a single can of soda. On top of that, it barely cooled anything at all, so our products stayed warm and basically went to waste. We brought steaks and other food with us, expecting proper facilities as described, and ended up in a very unpleasant situation. To make matters worse, the sink in the bathroom was unbelievably small — about the size of an A4 sheet of paper. It was extremely inconvenient to use on a daily basis and only added to the frustration. Also, there is no proper restaurant on-site, even though the description makes it sound like dining would not be a problem. The host told us that there are restaurants in the nearby village, just a 5-minute walk away. That is true — there are several restaurants there — but when we arrived, all of them were fully booked. It turns out you need to make reservations in advance if you want to eat there, but we were never warned about this. In the end, we had no choice but to eat low-quality Chinese takeaway instead of enjoying a proper dinner. Very disappointing after a long journey. In the end, what was promised and what we actually got were completely different. This feels like false advertising and a very dishonest approach to hosting. We travel a lot, but this was the first time we encountered such a blatant mismatch between description and reality.
We are really sorry that your stay with was not what you expected from a guesthouse. We do not nor ever did offer BBQ facilities to our guests. This was all explained to you in email correspondence giving the reason that our insurance will not cover for it. Perhaps you mistook insurance for students as you stated in your review. This is a guest house and not “student accommodation”. It was also stated to you in email correspondence before you arrived that there is not a Resturant on site. The fridge in the room is to keep a few drinks etc. cool and not the weekly grocery shopping. While the wash basin in the en-suite is small it works perfectly for its intended use. All these details and facilities are very clearly stated in the property description and are usually read prior to booking. We are only aware of one restaurant in Schull that take bookings and this restaurant also does walk ins. All the others are walk in without the need to book.
