The hospitality was unbelievable, lovely, attentive, kind- I can’t say enough good things about Tai, his mother and the inn. It is gorgeous, spacious yet cozy. It was a top experience and should not be missed. The inn is an hour walk from town and is best accessed by car but Tai will pick you up and drive you around. He took us to a neighborhood we were interested in for dinner and then picked us up immediately afterwards. Breakfast was delightful and they even made a special vegetarian dish for me. Bathrooms are shared yet private. The rooms are huge and so pretty! The traditional mattresses were cozy and comfy.
Takayama
Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. What an exquisite place. We spent two blissful nights here and from start to finish felt coddled and cared for by the lovely, gracious family who own and run the auberge. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, with the highest quality bedding and softest pyjamas imaginable (I had to buy some to take home!). The food was absolutely top-notch, five-star by any rating, as good as anywhere in the world (I’m talking NYC, London, Paris). The wine pairings were delicious, unusual, well thought through (and natural). The design was beautiful, clean, understated and very very cool with lots of locally crafted furniture. The service was attentive and kind, and we had everything we needed provided for us. Lastly the private onsen was a delight and always available when we wanted it. What a lovely, intimate hideaway—on the outskirts of Takayama, shuttle from and to station provided, making it very easy. Thank you Toshi and Keiko and family—this was an unforgettable stay.

Great location being right in the centre of the old town. Rooms a decent size but sadly felt the beds too hard and uncomfortable. The staff were so lovely and helpful and we especially enjoyed the onsen experience which was super clean and relaxing.
Good location, close to the station and the old town. Bikes to hire for free. Jacuzzi and steam room were nice to relax in. Room was clean with all the necessary facilities.
Very stylish hotel. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. On arrival, the valet helped with our luggage, showed me where to park (we convoyed to it) and gave me a lift back to the hotel. The room was very spacious (the most spacious one we had in the 3 weeks we were in Japan). They did free drinks in the evening and have a lovely lounge space to relax in.
Lovely hotel overlooking Gero Onsen. We had only booked bed and breakfast, and our rooms were well appointed and spacious, with views overlooking Gero. The Japanese breakfast was plentiful and good quality. The public Onsen had inside and outside pools which were spacious and relaxing, and very quiet when we visited. There is also a spacious bar, where you can use the Karaoke. The service throughout our stay was excellent.
An amazing traditional guesthouse in the heart of Magome, right on the Nakasendo. It was exceptionally clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Our host was lovely, spoke excellent English and was very thoughtful (made us a dinner booking at a nearby restaurant which was the best meal we've had in Japan). Our beds were comfortable, it was well-appointed and we had a perfect, relaxing night there.
When we arrived we were met by the lovely owner who showed us around the place. I don't know if they had a cancellation, but we got upgraded to our own little hut separated from the main house, with private bathroom, living room and upstairs bedroom. They have two outdoor private onsens with breathtaking views of the mountains. We had their dinner and breakfast option and it was absolutely supreme!
Dinner and breakfast were generous, tasty, authentic and diverse. The design was traditional, warm and very pretty. Amazin private Onsen - taking a bath in the snow was a unique experience. The overall vibe was relaxing and romantic.
Everything was incredible. The room with the Mountain View was beautiful. I spent so much time in the open air bath and it was so relaxing. The Kaiseki meals were some of the best and most authentic meals I ever had. The staff is so lovely too. Every detail was perfect, down to them waving goodbye to us as we left. Highly recommend!!!
Everything! The big, Japanese style room had a gorgeous view. The whole place was very atmospheric with lots of small nieches to relax. They have both public and private baths, and the ones we tried were lovely. The private baths cannot be reserved, but we always found at least one available. The staff was super friendly and helpful despite a slight language barrier (my Japanese is rather weak). Dinner and breakfast were plentiful, interesting and delicious. Easy to reach by bus from Takayama.
