Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Situated along Tanohara River and surrounded by tranquil nature in Kurokawa Onsen hot spring area, Oku no Yu Ryokan offers charming Japanese-style accommodation and various hot spring baths. It also boasts a thermal-heated indoor swimming pool. Free WiFi is provided in public areas. • Onsen : The best I've tried so far (together with Gero). Has a really nice smell (unlike Beppu lol) and the temperature is perfect. There are also many different separate onsen baths which you can have for yourself for 1 hour if you ask. • Food : Overall great, standard Kaiseki meal (served in a dining room where each room is separated by a small movable wooden wall) • Staff : Very helpful and gave me the option to opt out of my room and go for a smaller one (cheaper) since my friend cancelled last moment and I ended up alone. • Location : As you can imagine, a great natural onsen is often in the countryside, you do have a bus that goes from Aso station (Kumamoto) all the way to Hakata station (Fukuoka) which stops by Kurokawa which is helpful. The ryokan's staff also pick you up at the bus stop if you inform them of your arrival time.

The property is located 39 km from Hosokawa Residence Gyobutei, 8.8 km from Mount Aso and 29 km from KK Wings. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Traditional ryokan – we had a room with a toilet, and the onsen was shared. The room was comfortable and clean, but for us the highlights were two things. First, the “shared” onsen actually means four beautiful private baths – you simply borrow a key and enjoy the onsen privately as a couple or family, which was very pleasant. Second, the food – absolutely delicious, and what you see on the photos is exactly what you get. We highly recommend this ryokan.

It's an exceptional ryokan with very calm ambience. The staff is very friendly and helpful, offering a free ride to the bus stop. Onsen facilities are of high quality.
* excellent location, in a quiet part of the onsen town between a lot of trees * open-air baths were very spacious and opened up to a small river * indoor bath was easy to use * kaiseki menus were quite delicious even for western tastes * we liked the indoor decorations of the room and the tatami area was convenient, it didn’t extend to the whole room
Shinmeikan is a truly amazing ryokan/ onsen. The whole building just oozes authenticity. Great tatami style rooms overlooking the river, super friendly staff who will help you with all your needs. Great onsen baths, especially the cave bad is spectacular. Dinner and breakfast are equally high quality and display a variety of Japanese cuisine. Absolute perfect place if you want to experience traditional Japanese onsen style ryokan.
We had an unforgettable family stay at a traditional Ryokan in Japan. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who made us feel right at home. The serene atmosphere of the Ryokan, with its beautiful tatami rooms , and peaceful environment, provided the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our family enjoyed the delicious kaiseki meals served in Ryokan and loved relaxing in the private onsen. We highly recommend this Ryokan to families looking for a unique and authentic Japanese experience.
Clean, spacious room with comfortable futons, amenities and everything included. Private onsen hot enough, indoor and outdoor onsen was clean, big and free flowing. Small ryokan so it is quiet and intimate. Service was attentive.
The overall experience of staying in a ryokan with onsen, dinner and breakfast included and clothed on Japanese yukata give us taste of what it was like in a Japanese home. Upon our arrival, we were welcome with Japanese tea and dessert. It certainly sets the tone of our stay and warms our heart.
Super friendly and comfortable ryokan we stayed! I must say this is the ryokan have to stay in Aso! Although room without bathroom, but room comes with bigger space and basin and toilet! Our baby has so much fun to enjoy in tatami room, and also we enjoyed so many times in private onsen! Breakfast and dinner is delicious! I’d love to come back again!!
