The food at breakfast and dinner was varied and exceptional. All of the dishes I tried I liked , and they had a nice variety of western and Japanese. The room we had was huge and very comfortable. The onsen facilities were excellent, and very well kept. We are skiers and this hotel was very well setup for skiers. They have locker rooms for storage as well as changing, and on checkout day you can leave all your luggage , go ski, come back and change and then leave. But what makes this hotel a standout is the staff. I speak limited Japanese but had no issues communicating with the staff either speaking directly to them or using google translate. They are kind, patient and will do anything to help you. On checkout day, we went skiing and came back at 11:30 and needed to use the courier service taqubin which is conveniently located inside the hotel gift shop. However, we failed to notice beforehand that the shop takes a close break from 11:30 until 3:30 and our train leaves at 3;15. We were very stressed but the lady who runs the store and handles the courier said no problem, she would stay open just for us and give us time to change out of our ski clothes ,repack our ski gear and come back. It took us longer than we thought to repack and change because we had some trouble locating the ski bag as it was behind the counter in long storage. It didn’t matter, she still waited and when we finally finished she patiently helped us with the forms and everything was handled . When we left again for the station we had some time to wait so we purchased some small sweets and went back to give them to the staff as a thank you for all their exceptional efforts and help with our stay . They seemed genuinely surprised and happy and then walked out to wave us goodbye! How nice and a great happy surprise for us! We cannot recommend this hotel enough and we will be back someday.

Featuring 10 uniquely designed hot spring baths, Shosenkaku Kagetsu provides Japanese-style accommodation just a 5-minute walk from JR Echigo Yuzawa Train Station. It provides massage service and free Wi-Fi in public areas. Room is very clean. Staffs are also very nice and professional. Onsen is comfortable . But it’s a pity that we haven’t booked their dinner.

Set in peaceful landscapes, Kogakuro offers pleasant Japanese-style rooms with plenty of natural light. It features indoor and outdoor hot springs, a library and a cosy lounge with a fireplace. Free WiFi is available throughout the property. Great place, superb staff especially Mieko who is fantastic.

36 km from Niigata Station in Gosen, 一水荘 provides accommodation with access to a hot spring bath, hot tub and public bath. 8 km from Suntopia World and 38 km from Niigata Prefectural Civic Centre, the property offers an open-air bath and a garden. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. The meals were fantastic and staff very accommodating. We do not speak Japanese and the staff was kind and helpful, sometimes using Google translate to help communicate. Everything was excellent.

The ryokan will provide guests with air-conditioned units with a tatami, a safety deposit box, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with a bidet. Some units have a private entrance. At the ryokan, each unit includes bed linen and towels. The room, staff, service, facilities, food, and location were excellent.

Offering mountain views, Sasakura onsen Ryuunso in Itoigawa provides accommodation and an open-air bath. A hot spring bath is available for guests, along with a public bath. The ryokan also offers free WiFi, free private parking and facilities for disabled guests. It was a lovely stay, place is well maintained although built in the 80s or 90s so furnishing represents that era. Onsen was lovely with different options and the water temperature was quite hot. Its an elaborate traditional japanese breakfast spread with lots of tasty dishes. I would recommend the place and you feel very relaxed after the onsen and they provide lots of little snacks and ice-cream which was a bonus with the kids. It is quite off the main road and the onsen itself is the destination.

Each accommodation at the 3-star ryokan has mountain views, and guests can enjoy access to a hot spring bath and a public bath. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Amazing Ryokan with best food I ever had in a hotel! Wonderful personnel, amazing hispitality. Great onsen facilities. Has a besutiful traditional feel and located in a pristine, untouched nature. Private open air onsen has great views over the valley. So far, best hotel I have ever been in Japan. I highly recommend here to anyone wishing to experience such a great Ryokan. Thank you everyone for making my stay so wonderful.

A recently renovated ryokan in Tokamachi and within 38 km of Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort, Sake Hotel Tamakiya has an open-air bath, comfortable allergy-free rooms and free WiFi. The property features mountain and river views, and is 36 km from Maiko Snow Resort. There is a restaurant serving French cuisine, free private parking and an electric vehicle charging station.

Guests at the ryokan can enjoy an Asian breakfast. The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. The service when we arrived was absolutely stellar, on top of the amazing hospitality shown Yukiko-san asked about our itinerary and provided us with additional preparatory information which was an absolute lifesaver after the long drive! When we went into our room we found our coats already hung up and its these little things that make the service just so impressive. I also had to wake up the poor staff at around 12AM because we wanted to drive to a konbini nearby, but he was so helpful about it. The room itself was extremely luxurious, warm and comfortable. Everything was extremely clean and well-kept, and my favourite thing was the open-air bath which we were able to enjoy multiple times. The dinner was absolutely top-notch and extremely good value for what was paid. The ingredients were fresh and quality, but the culinary skill applied was nothing short of perfection. One of best meals I've had in Japan and I come very often.

Rankeisou provides a hot spring bath and free private parking, and is within 33 km of Yukyuzan Park and 33 km of Yukyuzan Small Animal Zoo. A public bath is available for guests, along with an open-air bath. The ryokan features a hot tub and a lift. What a perfect stay! I was warmly received when I arrived late at night after my flight into Narita. The hosts and staff are incredibly kind and helpful, and the inn and room (river view) are beautiful. The food was delicious! This is the first place I’ve ever stayed in Japan, and I will definitely be back again soon.
