THE MOST MEMORABLE STAY IN JAPAN!
I've changed 3 hostels, 2 ryokans, and this is definitely the best one!!! IT'S A HIDDEN GEM. AND I honestly hope it stays that way so I can book it on my next trip to Japan and stay here longer.
YOU get access to two private onsens, one on each floor, and one public onsen on the ground floor, that I honestly even loved more than the private ones.
Everything is super clean, taken care of with love and the staff is super nice, and they speak English in case you don't speak Japanese!
The rooms are incredible, I loved sleeping on the futon, there was enough space in rooms for everybody to leave their luggage, and in the kitchen you could help yourself to free tea, coffee, jams, bread etc. The kitchen has everything you need, and you can even do laundry. Everything you need is there.
The views from the room, and especially from the common room are incredible! They have a kotatsu, and books you can read. There's at least 5 sections in the common area in case you want privacy. Honestly the best ryokan ever. And it's affordable!!!
Shimoda
The ryokan will provide guests with air-conditioned units offering a desk, a coffee machine, a fridge, a safety deposit box, a flat-screen TV, a terrace and a private bathroom with a hot tub. Each unit has a kettle, while some rooms include a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, an oven and a microwave. At the ryokan, units are equipped with bed linen and towels. We will be back! WOW. This was a shot in the dark booking since I couldn’t find a place near the beach that was tattoo friendly. We were blown away at the facility, amenities and overall beauty of the location. I booked 3 rooms. Everyone had their own private onsen bath. My husband and I upgraded to the sauna barrel room and we LOVED IT. The guys all did sauna in the morning. They even give you handmade authentic sauna hats. Breakfast was simple but filling. Half of the group did the Japanese style, half did American. My jumbo toast made me feel like I was in a Ghibli movie having breakfast. There is a vending machine in the breakfast area was a variety of snacks and drinks. Our van made it on the roads to the property. So a standard vehicle will have no issue. Beautiful creak flowing in the backyard of every room. Every room has an entrance, toilet & sink room, living room (doubles as bedroom bc you have tatami beds), vanity sink & rack, THEN sliding door to your shower & bath, THEN sliding door to your porch with seating. Our room had the barrel immediately to the left of the porch with ANOTHER outdoor tub. Price was excellent!!

Full disclosure - this place is much fancier than the places we typically stay. It's expensive - but it was worth every yen. The facilities are luxurious. The food is an absolute marvel - creative, beautifully presented, and delicious. The private onsen on our balcony overlooking the ocean is the perfect way to relax. And the staff were all so incredibly kind to us and our children (especially Mayu). Our few days here were amongst the very best we had in Japan. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing, memorable splurge.

AWA Nishi-Izu was a hotel I stumbled upon on Instagram by chance, so I had no expectations, but it turned out to be absolutely wonderful. There are hot springs, delicious tea, and over 20 varieties of sake from different regions of Japan, all of which you can enjoy freely (all-you-can-drink). The most enchanting feature is the garden, where persimmon and mandarin trees are laden with fruit. You can pick them yourself anytime, replenishing your vitamin C while basking in the beauty of nature.
The lobby library is stocked with books and magazines about yoga, travel, and more—perfectly aligning with my interests. While the location is quite remote, simply being here and daydreaming is an unparalleled joy.
The rooms feature Western-style beds paired with tatami flooring, providing a spacious and comfortable setting. The hotel offers a variety of amenities, including different types of tea, coffee, yukata, skincare products, and more, all available for self-service.
On the second floor, there’s a meditation and yoga room, while the first floor houses the hot spring baths. The staff here are incredibly friendly; despite their limited English, they go out of their way to provide attentive service and assistance.
The Japanese-style breakfast was a delightful surprise, featuring my favorite grilled fish and miso soup, along with fresh vegetable salad sourced from local farmers and a selection of fermented healthy condiments. Every bite reflected thoughtful preparation and the authentic flavors of the region.

This histel thought about everything, there is a free onsen, rooftop, comfortable beds (kind od futons), a lot of recommendations available and super friendly staff. You can also wahs your clothes for free!
Very authentic experience in a traditional but original Ryokan. The futon was very comfortable and the room spacious. The onsen was pleasant and spacious, including an outside bath. The price was fair and convenient. Overall we recommend this place.
Had a beautiful ocean view Japanese style tatami room. We were served an INCREDIBLE dinner in the dining room while wearing yukata. Nice hot springs.
Old style hotel with tatami room. Good onsen B2 and annex Nice yukata Convenient shuttle bus to station Spacious tatami room
A wonderful stay with comfortable futon beds, private balconies overlooking the peaceful river, and a beautifully designed ryokan with modern Japanese interiors. The two onsen baths onsite are a great way to relax after a long day, and be sure to try the delicious home-cooked Japanese breakfast offered by the kind hostess! Could not recommend this stay more highly!
a very famous ryokan that K onsen bought over. it is a very old and historical so please listen to the staff and don't roll or drag your luggage on the floors and stairs. which is to say, don't bring heavy luggages as the rooms are all on higher levels Room is very clean and love love love the tatami room. Onsen is really lovely too. they have 2 private onsens, but they are rather small so the shared onsen will be better. lounge area is very big with different areas.
