This is a traditional Japanese ryokan with public baths (gender separated). Dinner and breakfast are amazing and plentiful, with locally sourced organic produce (even coffee!). Our room (Japanese room with private toilet) was to the left of the entrance. It was very spacious. The heater worked very well as autumn night was a bit damp and cold. The beds are futons on wood bed frames on tatami, and they are super comfortable. As I have a whole-leg tattoo which is usually not permitted in the public baths, I notified Ranko in advance, and she reserved the private bath for us. The private bath was a very beautiful blue ceramic bath filled with warm (I don’t think it’s very hot) healing hot spring water from the area. Ranko’s warm personality really made the stay memorable. Be sure to ask her for recommendations of the areas. She is a well of knowledge of the area!

Situated in Tendo in the Yamagata region, Ichiraku tendo spa & brewery features accommodation with free private parking, as well as access to a hot spring bath. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk and a lift, along with free WiFi throughout the property. The ryokan has family rooms as well as facilities for disabled guests. The Breakfast is good enough as me and hubby both are vegetarian but the dinner are exceptional very well planned n delicious!! Defiantly will come back again!

Yuze Hotel has mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking, located in Kazuno, 38 km from Appi Kogen Ski Resort. This 4-star ryokan offers a lift and luggage storage space. The ryokan provides a hot spring bath and a housekeeping service. Location is good but no public transportation available. Both breakfast and dinner are included, lots of variety of food

Set in Zao Onsen in the Yamagata region, Takasagoya Ryokan features accommodation with access to a public bath. The 3-star ryokan is 200 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. The owners/staff are extremely kind and accommodating. They went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. They allowed me to check in early and even let me use the onsen in the afternoon after checkout.

Each room at this ryokan is air conditioned and comes with a TV. The rooms include a private bathroom. For your comfort, you will find slippers and a hairdryer. It’s a beautiful hotel nestled into the hillside by the river. The reception area is amazing, especially with the Shamisen lady is playing. The traditional rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable.

For your comfort, you will find slippers and free complimentary bath amenities. Tokinenoyado Yunushi Ichijoh features free WiFi throughout the property. Where to begin? The room was excellent in size and had a nice feeling to it. The onsen was close by. The staff was so kind and service minded. The whole experience with dinner and breakfast was exceptional, especially the staff member whom served us with excellent English. Just the whole experience was quite wonderful.

7.6 km from Nyuto Hot Spring in Senboku, Aoni Sanso features accommodation with access to a hot spring bath, public bath and open-air bath. There is an in-house restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. The ryokan has family rooms. The room was very comfy, as shown in the photographs. The dinner and breakfast were excellent - some of the best food we had in Japan. The private onsen was great, beautiful outlook onto the snow, water not too hot. Staff very friendly and accommodating to our very poor Japanese - google translate worked well for us all!

The ryokan offers soothing natural hot spring bath in natural stone tubs and an open-air hot springs bath. A shared lounge features a tatami (woven-straw) floor and view of a Japanese garden. The ryokan also offers free use of bicycles. Beautiful property. The room was spacious! Even for Western standards. The private onsen was very nice. We did not try the public onsen. The staff were courteous and helpful. Although the staff had limited English proficiency, they all used a translation app to help with communication which was incredibly helpful.

This ryokan features free private parking and free shuttle service. The accommodation offers a 24-hour front desk, a lift and luggage storage for guests. Nice outdoor onsen, food was perfect. Staff was helpfull and friendly
