Clementine's Town House Hotel, hotel in York

Set in secluded gardens, Clementine's Town House Hotel, BW Premier Collection has free WiFi and characterful rooms.

It's a truly beautiful place with a unique interior design that we loved. Findig our room was like climbing up the stairs in a maze (in a good way) and made us feel as if we were staying in a castle. The room was clean, with surprise Kit-Kat bars and Cadbury hot chocolate powder on the tea table. The bed was big and comfy, bathroom shower excellent with two shower heads. Staff was really nice and helpful (e.g. carrying my luggage to our room). We loved the little garden in the back and the location is also perfect, in a quiet area but ten minutes on foot from the city centre. We appreciated that at breakfast, the self-service table was monitored and restacked regularly. If we return to York, we would love to book this place again.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Very dissapointed with York, the town was so busy, people in the bars and pubs at lunch time coming out drunk and shouting about, looked like a cattle market! York was like London during the day and Ibiza in the afternoon/evening, not a historic town we thought it would be, not a place to visit at weekends. We have been told York is now a place for hen and stag do's, this we can see!

Have been to York several times, and, in terms of tourism, it has changed over the years. However it still remains, without doubt, a wonderful place to explore and absorb. Forget the crowds queuing up for Harry Potter style attractions, and become absorbed by the truly amazing history of the city all around you.

Great city, plenty of restaurants and shops loved learning about the history. Disliked the sightseeing cruise as it took you passed all the bars along the water front and the rest was just trees and bushes, would not recommend.

York is full of history...and a walking tour is a must. The museums and exhibits are all wonderful and offer 12-month use of their tickets! The Minster itself is a marvel and stunning! We chose this hotel because of the good reviews and location and on site parking, unfortunately the only room available was a twin, best nights sleep I've had since we were married, the beds were so comfortable, room was a decent size en suite with everything you needed, even a fridge and small freezer compartment. And a fan. Really nice cooked breakfast in the morning. 10 min walk to the Minster and city centre. Staff were really welcoming and helpful, we will definitely book here again next time we come to York.

Sensational. Couldn't fault it one bit. Staff were polite and welcoming, facilities are great. Room is superb value for money. We had a room with a view which overlooked 'Thor's' with York Minster cathedral on the horizon. Hotel was extremely clean, ample parking, sizeable and spacious rooms. Location is perfect for train station (right next to it) and a 5-minute walk to the city centre, 10-minute walk to the Railway Museum. Not much more you could ask for!
